High school rodeo clubs compete in Elko

The Nevada High School Rodeo Association was back in action in Elko on Oct. 8-10. And once again local clubs shined at the competition.

Emma Garijo turned a strong performance for the Humboldt County Rodeo Club, winning the barrel racing average with a combined time of 31.646 seconds. 

She won the first performance at 15.873 and was third in the second performance in a time of 15.773. Garijo also earned all-around cowgirl honors.

In addition, Garijo led the way in pole bending with an average time of 42.345. 

She was the runner-up in the opening performance at 21.665 and she won the second performance at 20.680. 

Garijo was 13th in breakaway roping, notching a time of 3.69 seconds in the first, which was good enough for sixth. She missed her calf in the second performance. Garijo and partner Billy DeLong were 11th in team roping.

Natalie Mori earned a third-place finish in the girls cutting average with 135 points. Mori finished eighth in the first performance and jumped to the runner-up spot in the second performance with 72 points.

After two second-place finishes in each performance of reined cow horse, Mori was second in the event with 287.50 points. Mori placed 12th in the barrel racing average at 32.950, earning a 10th-place outing in the second performance of the event at 16.173.

Lexi Garijo and partner Kaden Florez from Fernley were third in team roping in a time of 24.720. The duo had two clean runs, placing eighth in the first performance at 14.300 and they jumped to second in the final performance in a time of 10.420.

Garijo roped her calf in 2.94 seconds in the first performance of breakaway roping to place third, but missed her calf in the next performance and was eighth overall. Garijo found herself in 17th in the barrel racing average at 37,926, after knocking down a barrel in the second performance. 

She was 26th in pole bending with an average time of 48.977 after knocking down a barrel in her first run.  

Ashley Rookstool was sixth in girls cutting with 130 points, which included a third-place finish in the first performance with 69 points.

Emma and Lexi Garijo are currently third and fifth in the all-around cowgirl standings. Lincoln County’s Wylee Mitchell leads to all-around standings with 405.20 points. 

On the boys side, Billy DeLong picked up a pair of victories for the Humboldt County Club. 

Delong was the only competitor to have two clean runs in steer wrestling for an average of 26.170. 

He won the first performance at 16.540 and the runner-up in the second performance at 9.63. Delong also topped the boys cutting standings with 144 points, winning both performances with 72 points apiece.

DeLong was 12th in the tie-down roping, after not time in the first performance. He came back to stop the clock at 14.110 in the second performance to place fifth.

Delong is the current all-around cowboy points leader with 328.95. Wells’ Riley Rodderick is second at 273.

Cooper Hill was fifth in boys cutting with 122 points, scoring 61 points in each performance.

Desi Coombs was third in the barrel racing average at 21.790, which included a victory in the second performance at 15.613, the fastest of the weekend.

Coombs had two top-five runs in pole bending to finish third with an average of 43.767. She had times of 21.985 and 21,782. Coombs was 11th in breakaway roping after placing fifth in the first performance, but she recorded no time in her second go.  

Amelia Lancaster was eighth in barrel racing with a combined time of 32.334, which included placing seventh in the first performance and ninth in the second. 

She was 11th in pole bending with an average of 49.429, after knocking down a pole in the first go. 

She bounced back with a time of 21.837 to place fifth in the second performance. In addition, she was 33rd in breakaway roping. Lancaster and partner Jarret Peek were seventh in team roping at 29,720, with two clean runs of 13.690 and 16.030.

Coombs is sixth in the all-around standings and Lancaster us 10th.

Gracie Lou Holman placed 12th in the breakaway roping average, after recording a no time in the first go. She bounced back to stop the clock at 2.010 to place fifth in the second performance. Holman scored 61 points in each round of girls cutting to finish 12th with 122 points.

Jolena Ayers placed 10th in goat tying after recording no time in the first go. Ayers bounced back to place fourth in the second performance with a time of 9.48.  Ayers was seventh in pole bending with a time of 45.841. Italy Jo Holman was 22nd in barrel racing and 29th in pole bending.

In the junior high division, Humboldt County’s Matti Delong took home the top spot in barrel racing with an average of 32.269. She won both performances with times of 16.540 and 15.729.

DeLong was fourth in girls breakaway roping at 29.760, which included winning the second performance at 3.42, which was the quickest time of the weekend. In addition, DeLong was 10th in pole bending, 11th in goat tying, and 11th in ribbon roping.

Layne Byrd won the boys breakaway roping in an average time of 7.97 seconds. He placed third in the first performance at 4.35 and was fourth in the second in a time of 3.62. Byrd was third in ribbon roping, fifth in team roping and sixth in boys goat tying, 

Taylor Hill and Brynn Barto were fourth and ninth in the barrel racing average, while Huntley Byrd and Shailee Robison were 22nd and 23rd, respectively. 

Huntley Byrd finished second in breakaway roping, Barto was sixth, Hill seventh and Louise DeLong 13th in breakaway roping.

Louise DeLong, Huntley Byrd and Hill were 14th, 15th and 16th in goat tying, while Barto was 18th and Robison 21st. In addition, Barto was third in team roping.

Huntley Byrd placed fifth in ribbon roping and Hill, Louise DeLong and Logan Marshall placed 14th, 18th and 23rd.     

Bryce Fears was 11th in boys breakaway and 16th in boys goat tying, while Marshall was 14th in boys goat tying. Fears and Marshall were seventh and eighth in chute dogging.

Battle Mountain’s Landry Meiman, Gracie Mashburn and Jorja Mashburn were sixth, 20th and 25th in barrel racing. 

Eli Lancaster was the runner-up in boys breakaway roping with a time of 8.45. In addition, Lancaster was seventh in chute dogging.

Jorja Mashburn was sixth in girls goat tying and ninth in girls breakaway roping and Gracie Mashburn and Meiman were 12th and 14th in pole bending.

The Nevada High School Rodeo Association has two fall events left, starting in Alamo on Nov. 5-7 and Moapa Valley on Nov. 19-21.
