Pershing County soccer team splits matches

The Pershing County soccer team traveled to two matches last weekend. Friday, they lost to Whittell (5-0). However, they bounced back on Saturday to beat Yerington (5-1).

According to coach Matt Fuller, the Mustangs challenged the Whittell Warrior’s defense.

“We had a few chances to score but did not get any goals,” he said.

They more than made up for it on Saturday.

The Mustangs jumped out to a 3-0 score in the first six minutes of the game. For the first goal, Kylee Fuller took a shot from 30 yards out and buried it on the right side.

Next, Fuller took a corner kick. Mikayla Leavitt trapped the ball on the back side and pounded it into the net.

Yasmin Acosta scored the third goal from a through pass by Fuller. And that was just the first six minutes of the game.

Yerington tightened up their defense in the second half, but the Mustangs scored more goals. Acosta made a pass to Fuller who took a long rainbow shot over the goalie’s outstretched fingers. It was Fuller’s second goal of the day.

Finally, Leavitt took a rebounded shot off the goalie and put it in the net. She and Fuller each scored two goals. Acosta scored one. Fuller had two assists. Acosta had one.

“Overall, the ladies played a great game from beginning to end,” said Fuller. “They put together many great passes and shots on goal.”

On Tuesday, Oct. 19, the Mustangs hosted Sage Ridge at 4 p.m.

It was the last home game of the season and senior night. Pershing said farewell to two seniors – Kylee Fuller and Anna Jimenez.

The results of the game were not available at press time.

On Saturday, the team goes to Battle Mountain for the last game of the regular season. The Mustangs beat the Longhorns 9-1 earlier in the year. They are hoping for a similar outcome.
