The Lowry High School boys soccer team headed to Fallon last Thursday, down a number of players in its match-up with Churchill County.
The Buckaroos entered the day in a prime spot for one of the three Northern 3A East playoff spots, while the Greenwave were fifth in the league with just one win this season — that coming over winless Dayton.
After a scoreless first 40 minutes, Lowry used two second-half goals to avoid the upset and beat Churchill County 2-1.
The Buckaroos are now in second place in the Northern 3A East at 5-1 and 5-10 overall.
Elko leads the league at 7-0 and are the only team to beat Lowry in league play.
Spring Creek and Fernley are battling for the third playoff spot.
Lowry junior Jose Avila put the Buckaroos up 1-0 in the 54th minute and Andrew Bravo added a much-needed insurance goal in the 74th minute to give the Buckaroos a 2-0 advantage.
Churchill County made the ending interesting, scoring in the 79th minute, off a shot by Yahir Ugalde. The Buckaroos were able to hang in the final minutes to secure the win.
Lowry was scheduled to host Dayton on Tuesday and results were not available at press time.
The Buckaroos conclude their regular-season home schedule this weekend against Elko on Friday at 3:45 p.m. and Fernley on Saturday at 11:45 a.m.
The regular season concludes with a road trip to Spring Creek on Tuesday, Oct. 26, at 3:45 p.m.
