The Lowry High School girls soccer team closed out the first half of the Northern 3A East season against a pair of Elko County rivals.
The Lady Bucks fell short in both matches to drop to 4-6-1 overall and 1-4 in the Northern 3A East.
Lowry traveled to league-leading Spring Creek on Tuesday, Oct. 5, and lost 7-1.
After an early goal by Spring Creek to lead 1-0, Lowry tied the match in the 16th minute, when Kenzi-Dowd Smith crossed the ball to fellow senior Emily Backus for the goal.
The Spartans took the lead for good in the 22nd minute off a header by Shyann Lamb.
Spring’s Megan Borresch and Avery Beatty added goals later in the first half to give the Spartans a 4-1 advantage at halftime.
Spring Creek went on to added three goals in the final 40 minutes to account for the final score.
Lowry rally falls
short against Elko
Lowry held its annual Pink Game on Saturday against Elko, as the Lady Bucks honored Rochelle Smith.
The Lady Bucks’ Abigail Magana made a number of saves from Elko shots in the first half, to keep the game scoreless at halftime.
Lowry had a couple scoring opportunities in the first 40 minutes but could not convert.
Lowry broke the scoreless tie, as Backus’ shot from about 10 yards out went off the hands of the Elko goalie and just past the line in the 47th minute.
However, momentum quickly changed, as Elko netted four goals in the next 10 minutes.
The match-tying goal came in the 50th minute and the Indians went in front 2-1 in the 52nd minute, putting back a shot that was deflected by Magana.
Elko knocked in a penalty kick in the 56th minute to go in front 3-1 and closed out the scoring spurt in the 60th minute, as the Elko striker broke free from the Lowry defense and went half the field on her own for the goal.
The match would get more physical late in the match, which led to a penalty kick for Lowry in the 69th minute.
Dowd-Smith did not miss the opportunity to score, hitting the back of the net to make the score 4-2.
Minutes later, Dowd-Smith left the game with an injury after colliding with the Elko goalie as she crashed the goal for a scoring opportunity.
In the 78th minute, Elko was called for another foul in the box, which led to a penalty kick for Backus. The senior made the shot to close the gap to 4-3.
Lowry kept the pressure up on Elko, but could not score the game-tying goal in the final two minutes of play.
Lowry hosted Churchill County on Tuesday and results were not available at press time.
The Lady Bucks are off this weekend and return to the field on Friday, Oct. 22, in Dayton.
