Kuskie runs away with individual title at Lowry Invitational

After a steady rain for much of the morning, skies cleared this past Friday for the Lowry Invitational at Winnemucca Municipal Golf Course, giving the cross country runners excellent conditions to run into.

Lowry senior Jovi Kuskie set a personal best on the 3.1-mile course, easily outdistancing the rest of the field.

Kuskie ran the course in a time of 19 minutes, 31 seconds, nearly two minutes ahead of Spring Creek’s Kiely Munson at 21:17. Spring Creek’s Brianna Perchetti was second with a time of 21:31 and Churchill County’s Savanna Regli was third at 21:41.

Spring Creek won the team title with 19 points and Elko was second at 36. Kuskie was on the Lowry girl runner in the race.

Lowry’s Natalee Formby was fourth in the junior varsity girls’ race, as the freshman set a personal-best time of 25:08.

Dayton swept the top three spots, with Whitney Winward winning with a time of 22:58. Allison Hoffman (23:48) and Aspen Evans (24:45) were second and third, respectively.

The Lowry boys finished second as a team on its home course with 53 points.

Spring Creek claimed the team title with 22 points and Elko was third at 58.

Just like Kuskie in the girls race, Yerington’s Kutoven Stevens ran away with the boys race. The senior set a course record at 15:29, beating the previous best of Elko’s Alex Klekas back in 2019.

Damonte Ranch’s Jackson Elliott was second at 16:52. Damonte Ranch is coached by former Lowry runner Lupe Cabada, the brother of Sergio Cabada, who currently helps coach the Lowry squad.

Spring Creek’s Liam Hamilton (17:27), Joel Harmon (17:39) and Elko’s Braylon Baggett (17:57.24) rounded out the top five.

Lowry was led by senior Eduardo Martinez-Calderon, who placed seventh with a time of 18:00. Ivan Lara was eighth, seven seconds behind his teammate at 18:07.

Junior Kaid Sanchez finished 13th at 18:48.99 in a close three-way finish. Spring Creek’s Ian Mitchell was 11th at 18:48.20 and Elko’s Gavin Nicola was 12th in a time of 18:48.37.

Angel Huerta (19:20) and Austin Formby (19:32) were 17th and 18th, respectively, and Tyler Morrison was 23rd with a time of 20:10.

Lowry travels to Wells on Friday for the Wells Invitational and will be in Spring Creek on Thursday, Oct. 21, for the Northeast Nevada JV Championships.

The regular season concludes on Friday, oct. 22, with the Sierra Lutheran Dave Marson Trail Race.

The Northern 3A Regional Championships are set for Friday, Oct. 29, at Shadow Mountain Park in Sparks at Reed High School.

The NIAA 3A State Championships will be on Saturday, Nov. 6, on the same Shadow Mountain Course.
