The Pershing County soccer team delivered two energetic home games this week. On Friday afternoon the Mustangs beat the West Wendover Wolverines with a final score of 4-3. Saturday morning, they lost to White Pine (2-0).

At their best, the Mustangs communicate and work together as a unified force. That was evident against West Wendover.
In the first half, Rylee Renfroe made a cross to Yasmin Acosta. The freshman forward took a shot and scored for the Mustangs. However, the Wolverines quickly tied up the score at one.
Kylee Fuller answered with a corner kick that Jillian Bridges trapped and booted into the goal to break the tie. It was the first goal of the junior’s high school career. She generally functions as the goalkeeper.
With two minutes left in the first half, Acosta made a pass through Wendover’s defense. Renfroe slammed the ball into the goal from 15 yards out. The half ended at 3-1.
In the second half, Anna Jimenez made a long cross from the right side to Acosta, who shot to the right side of the goal, bringing the score to 4-1. It was Acosta’s second goal of the game, but Wendover wasn’t finished. They grew more determined as the clock wound down.
The Wolverines scored two more goals late in the second half, one in the last minutes.
Freshman goalie Lily Anderson-Burt had eight saves against the visitors.
“Overall, it was a great game and the ladies played well,” said coach Fuller. “It got a little close there in the last 15 minutes, but the ladies were able to shut down the Wolverines and secure the win.”
PCHS loses defensive battle to White Pine
Neither White Pine or Pershing scored in the first half of Saturday’s game. Each team successfully defended their goal from the other in what looked like a stalemate.
“Unfortunately, White Pine scored about eight minutes into the second half, held onto that score and finished out the game 2-0,” said Fuller. “The ladies played well, made great passes and challenged the opponent all through the game. Jillian Bridges started and played in the game as goalkeeper and did a terrific job.”
Upcoming games
Pershing County’s next few games are on the road. On Friday, Oct. 15, they travel to Whittell. Saturday, Oct. 16, they go to Yerington. On Thursday, Oct. 21, they face rival Battle Mountain in Longhorn territory.
Their final game of the regular season is on Yanni Field on Monday, Oct. 25 against Sage Ridge. The Pershing County soccer team thrives on performing before a home crowd and hopes for a big turnout.
