We learn a lot from loss but it feels good to win. Just ask the Pershing County girls soccer team.
The Mustangs defeated the visiting Battle Mountain Longhorns last Tuesday (Sept. 28) with a final score of 9-1.
It was the Mustangs’ first win of the season and it fell during homecoming week.
“Overall, the ladies played a great game. They moved the ball and communicated all game,” said coach Matt Fuller. “I’m proud of how they played and came together as a team.”
Battle Mountain pushed back but could not overcome Pershing County’s defense.
Rylee Renfroe and Yasmin Acosta each scored three of the Mustangs’ nine goals. Two of Renfroe’s goals came from assists by Kylee Fuller. In another instance, Renfroe took a long pass, dribbled through a wall of Longhorns and scored.
Fuller also assisted with one of Acosta’s goals. Anna Jimenez provided an assist as well.
“Anna made a through pass over the defense to Yasmin who made a beautiful shot past the goalie,” said Fuller.
Acosta took a long dribble through the Longhorn’s defense and scored again with a shot to the left side.
Fuller, Jimenez and Julie Chandler each scored one goal. Fuller and Jimenez’s assists came from Acosta and Fuller.
Chandler seized a loose ball in front of the Longhorn’s goal and blasted a shot past the goalkeeper. Her action jumped the score to 9-1 to finish the game.
Upcoming games
The Mustangs host West Wendover on Friday, Oct. 8, at 4 p.m. The next day, they welcome White Pine at 10 a.m.
