It was a tough week for the Lowry High School volleyball team who suffered three losses, including two on its home floor.
Lowry traveled to Reno on Tuesday, Sept. 27, and was defeated by Wooster in three sets. The match was originally set to be played in Winnemucca at the beginning of September but was postponed due to transportation issues for Wooster.
Lowry was at home this weekend to host a pair of Lyon County schools. Dayton visited Winnemucca on Friday and went back home with a 25-22, 25-22 and 31-29 victory.
Fernley traveled to Winnemucca on Saturday afternoon and beat Lowry 25-22, 25-14 and 25-14, as the Lady Bucks dropped to 8-8 overall and 1-2 in the Northern 3A East.
Against Dayton, Lowry scored the first three points of the opening set, starting with an ace from Kadance Cooney and a kill by Kailey Franklin.
Dayton came back with a 10-3 run to go in front 10-6 but that was short-lived as Lowry fought back to lead 13-11 after an ace by Alexis Olson, a kill by Alexandria Barocio and a block by Savannah Stoker.
The Lady Bucks led 22-21 after an ace by Megan Cook, but the Dust Devils scored the final four points of the set, including the final point on an ace.
Dayton used that momentum to score the first three points of the second set, only to see Lowry storm back to lead 13-5 after kills by Stoker and Olson and an ace from Franklin.
Later in the set, the Lady Bucks collected two more kills from Stoker and another kill by Cook to go in front 20-18. That advantage increased to 22-18 after a block by Mckenzi Petersen, but Lowry could not close out the set as Dayton scored the final seven points.
The third set went back-and-forth with each team leading at one point. Lowry led 8-6 after a kill and block by Jada Matheny. The Dust Devils bounced back to go in front 16-12 but Lowry came back to go in front 20-19 after kills by Cooney and Petersen.
The third set was tied at 21, 22 and 23, when Dayton picked up match point at 24-23 after an ace. The Dust Devils couldn’t finish off the match as it was tied at 24, 25 and 26. Lowry held leads at 27-26 and 28-27 but could not win the set. Dayton came back to go in front 29-28, when Lowry tied the set at 29-29 on a kill by Franklin.
The Dust Devils eventually scored the final two points to win the match.
Fernley sweeps Lowry
Saturday’s match with Fernley started about 90 minutes late, as Fernley ran into some bus troubles but were still able to get to Winnemucca.
The Vaqueros led by as many as eight points in the first set at 16-8, but the Lady Bucks clawed their way back to within three points at 19-16 after a tip by Alexandria Barocio, a kill by Cook and an ace by Belen Barocio.
A block by Olson and a tip by Alexandria Barocio closed the gap to 23-22, but Fernley scored the final three points of the set.
Fernley never trailed in the second set and led 23-10 at one point. The Lady Bucks were able to close the gap to 24-14 on a kill by Stoker but got no closer.
Lowry picked two kills and an ace from Stoker and two more points from Alexandria Barocio to give Lowry an 12-11 lead. Fernley called a timeout at that point and came out of the stoppage on fire and scored 13 points in a row to go up 24-12. Three points later, the Vaqueros closed out the match.
Lowry traveled to Spring Creek on Tuesday and results were not available at press time. Lowry hosts Elko on Saturday at noon.
