Cassinelli shoots career-best 80 at Dayton tournament for Lowry girls golf team

The regular season for the Lowry High School girls golf team is quickly coming to an end.

The Lady Bucks were back on the course for a pair of tournaments last week and turned in two third-place finishes.

Lowry freshman Katie Cassinelli shot a career-best 80 at Empire Ranch Golf Course on Monday, Sept. 27, as part of the Dayton tournament. That helped Lowry shoot a 374, finishing behind Douglas (358) and Truckee (371). Elko (433) and South Tahoe (441) rounded out the top five. South Tahoe was playing for the first time this season, after being forced out of South Tahoe due to the Caldor Fire.

Truckee’s Ryan Flynn continued her streak of winning individual medalist honors, shooting a 68. Douglas’ Abby Detsch was third with a round of 88. Douglas’ Abby Miller and Mackenzie Willis tied for fourth with scores of 89.

Lowry sophomore Piper Nichols was sixth overall with a round of 91 and senior Bailey Hayes was in the top 10 with a round of 93.

Freshman Presley Hayes had the final kept score for the Lady Bucks at 110 and fellow freshman Jordyn Medicine Cloud carded a 139.

at Ponderosa Ranch

The Northern 3A moved to Ponderosa Ranch Golf Course in Truckee on Tuesday, Sept. 28, with similar results.

Douglas won the team title with a score of 369 and Truckee (395) and Lowry (399) were second and third, respectively. Elko and Churchill County tied for fourth at 449.

Flynn was the low medalist at 73, followed by Miller from Douglas at 87 and Lowry’s Cassinelli was third with a round of 91.

Bailey Hayes shot a 96 for the Lady Bucks, followed by Nichols (99), Presley Hayes (113), Medicine Cloud (143) and Crystal Castillo (156).

The Northern 3A does not hold a regional championship tournament and the three state tournament berths are based on the final regular season point standings.

Douglas leads the league with 42 points and Truckee (35) and Lowry (33) are second and third, respectively, with two tournaments remaining.

Elko is fourth with 25.5 points and Fernley (15.5) is fifth.

The Lady Bucks have three golfers in the top six of the individual standings. Cassinelli is second in the Northern 3A with 60.5 points, Bailey Hayes is second with 50 and Nichols is currently third with 44.5 points.

The Northern 3A regular season concludes this week, with a tournament in Fernley on Tuesday and at Genoa Lakes on Wednesday.

The NIAA 3A State Championships take place on Oct. 18-9 in Mesquite.
