The PCHS volleyball team hosted the Coral Academy Falcons last Wednesday. It was the Mustang’s homecoming game.
“The energy in the gym was rocking,” said coach Monica Halverson. “Our fans cheered as we played.”
The student section filled up with cheerleaders and athletes from the other sports teams. It was a good week to be a Mustang with wins for the football, volleyball and soccer teams. They all support one another.
The Falcons’ hitters changed their strategy in the second set.
“They started to send back passes off the first touch and tipping over our block,” said Halverson.
The Mustangs responded with a tight defense focused on blocker coverage. Seniors Presley Burrows, Hannah Montes and Bela Rosas led the team to a three-set win 25-10, 25-6, 25-5.
Burrows had eight aces, eight kills and seven digs. Montes added two digs. Rosas contributed an ace, seven assists and four digs.
“Aledda (Sam) carried the team from the bench with cheering,” added Halverson.
Unfortunately, Sam is temporarily sidelined due to an injury.
The JV girls also won their match against the Falcons (25-15, 25-19). Aaliyah Allen led the attack with five hitting kills. Yasmine McKinney had four. Mady Grenz added two. Morgan Swindlehurst, Anna Happy and Kaylee Poffenroth each had one hitting kill. Happy added a tip kill.
Coaches Halverson, Nancy Meissner and Holland are grateful to the volleyball parents for bringing them treats, dinners and desserts during the week.
“Thanks for the gifts, decorating the locker room and the sushi lunch,” said Halverson.
Upcoming games
On Friday, the Mustangs travel to Incline to play the Highlanders. On Saturday, they host the North Tahoe Lakers. JV plays at 11 a.m. Varsity follows at noon.
On Friday, Oct. 15, the girls go to Yerington. They’re back on their home court on Saturday, Oct. 16, for Dig Pink 2021. The annual fundraiser features a cake raffle, silent auction and bake sale. They’ll host the Silver Stage Nighthawks.
This year, half of the proceeds will go to the Jeremiah and Mary Brinker family. Jeremiah is currently undergoing treatment for brain cancer.
“We want people to wear pink shirts and come to our game ready to buy baked goods, bid on the silent raffle items and enter the cake raffle,” says Halverson. JV plays at 11 a.m. The varsity follows at noon.
