Lady Bucks split matches with Dust Devils, Vaqueros

It was a mixed bag of results for the Lowry High School girls soccer team this past weekend on its home field.

Lowry hosted Dayton on Friday and suffered a 3-1 loss to the Dust Devils. The match was tied at 1-1 after 40 minutes of play, but Dayton scored two second-half goals to secure the victory.

For nearly 50 minutes on Saturday, it appeared the Lady Bucks were headed for the same result. Despite having much of the possession for the first half against Fernley, the Vaqueros scored near the end of the first half in the 35th minute to lead 1-0 at halftime.

However, the Lady Bucks kept the offensive pressure going and scored three goals in a 12-minute span in the second half to beat Fernley 3-1 and improve to 4-4-1 overall and 1-2 in the Northern 3A East Division.

Emily Backus tied the match with Fernley at 1-1 on a shot from just outside the 18-yard box in the 52nd minute.

Two minutes later, Alia Novi scored the eventual game winning-goal, as her shot went off the goalie’s hand and trickled past the line and into the net.

Lowry added an insurance goal in the 64th minute as Backus crossed a ball inside the 18-yard box and in front of the goal and Viviana Alanis was there to redirect into the net.

The Lady Bucks conclude the first half of Northern 3A East play this week. Lowry was in Spring Creek on Tuesday and results were not available at press time.

Lowry hosts Elko on Saturday morning at 11:45 a.m. and hosts Churchill County on Tuesday, Oct. 12, at 3:45 p.m.
