It was a successful week for Pershing County volleyball.
On Wednesday, they traveled to Longhorn country to beat rival school Battle Mountain in five sets 25-23, 23-25, 25-18, 19-25, 16-14.
In West Wendover, on Friday, they defeated the Wolverines in three sets 25-19, 25-18, 25-15.

“Battle Mountain is always fun to play because of the rivalry between us,” said coach Monica Halverson. “As we walked into the gym, we knew we were going to have to fight to win this game. It took us all five sets to make that happen.”
In the third set the Mustangs fought with all the ferocity they could muster.
Presley Burrows made a huge kill in the final set to seize the win. She delivered 27 kills, an ace and a block for Pershing County.
Battle Mountain scored four of the first five points of the fifth and deciding set, when Pershing County came back to take the lead at 7-6.
The Lady Longhorns took control from there and had match point at 14-11 but could not close out the match.
Presley Burrows tied the fifth set at 14 with a kill and the senior won the match on the next point with another kill.
“Each one of my girls have some fundamental corrections to make, but they are fighting together and winning together,” said Halverson.
The stats reflect the coach’s words.
Bela Rosas had three aces, 13 digs, 17 assists and a block. Kaydance Happy added three aces, two digs, and one assist, hit and block.
Libero Andrea Canchola had two digs. Kaylen Halverson contributed four aces, five digs, 18 assists and a block.
Taylor Garland had two aces, eight digs and seven kills. Raegan Burrows added two aces, four digs, six kills and a block.

The Mustangs overcame obstacles this week, including the absence of team members Aledda Sam and Hannah Montes. Friday, they battled road fatigue as they made the four-and-a-half hour round trip to Elko County to play the Wolverines.
“We rallied around and played as a team,” said Halverson. “We served well and dug the ball to a scrappy opponent. The Wolverines do not back down, but we outplayed them in every set.”
According to the coaches, the JV girls continue to improve. However, they had a tough week with losses to Battle Mountain (24-26, 23-25) and West Wendover (19-25, 20-25).
The top JV passers for the week were Aaliyah Allen, Mady Grenz, Yasmine McKinney, Katie Moore and Kaylee Poffenroth.
On Wednesday, Sept. 29, the Mustangs host their homecoming games. They’ll play the Coral Academy Falcons at 4 p.m. and 5 p.m.
Aledda Sam is the varsity volleyball princess. Mady Grenz wears the crown for the JV girls.
