Longhorns drop first game of the season

After starting the season with a pair of home victories, the Battle Mountain High School football team hit the road last Friday for a Northern 2A match-up with Incline.

The Highlanders proved not be gracious hosts, knocking off the Longhorns 21-0, as Battle Mountain dropped to 2-1 on the season and 0-1 in league play.

“Offensively we weren’t able to sustain our drives,” said BMHS coach Mitch Domagala.

Incline took the opening kickoff and drove down the field on the Battle Mountain defense. Incline converted two fourth-down plays to keep the initial possession moving.

The Highlanders also fumbled the ball deep in Longhorn territory but recovered the ball. Moments later, Incline completed the drive with a 1-yard quarterback sneak.

Battle Mountain looked poised to score on its opening possession, as Terrance Fetterly had a good return on the ensuing kickoff setting the Longhorns up on the 39-ayrd line.

From there, Battle Mountain had three consecutive runs, putting them at the Incline 30-yard line.

However, the drive stalled after that and the Longhorns turned the ball over on downs at the Incline 19-yard line.

Both teams battled out the rest of the first quarter with short drive and punts.

Halfway thru the second quarter incline pushed thru its second touchdown of the night on a 2-yard run to lead 14-0, the eventual score at halftime.

The second half was a battle of short drives and punts as the two teams traded possessions back and forth.

Incline got its last touchdown in the third quarter on a sweep around the end for the final points.

“We’re going to change up a few things this week and see if we can’t get back on track,” Domagala said.  “These kids go hard and never give up. They’ll bounce back”

Battle Mountain is scheduled to travel to Silver Stage on Saturday for an 11 a.m. kickoff.
