The fall season for the Nevada High School Rodeo Association is coming to a close, as the competitors were in Alamo on the weekend of Nov. 5-7.
Once again, the local junior high and high school rodeo clubs turned in strong performances.
Humboldt County’s Billy DeLong took home the top spot in the boys cutting average with 147 points, winning both performances with 23 and 74 points, respectively.
In addition, DeLong placed ninth in tie-down roping, after turning a sixth-place finish in the first performance in a time of 20.830. He did not have a time in the second performance.
DeLong has a healthy lead in the all-round standings with 366.95 points, while Pahrump’s Garrett Jepson is second at 300. DeLong also leads the season steer wrestling standings.
Cooper Hill was fourth in the boys cutting average with 129 points, 11th in rifle shoot and 12th in the trap shoot. Aidan Peters placed 16th in rifle shoot. Hill is 13th in the all-around standings.
Emma Garijo won the breakaway roping average in a time of 6.44 seconds. She won the first performance at 2.73 and she was fourth in the second performance at 3.71.
Garijo turned in two top-five finishes in barrel racing to place third in the average with a time of 36.846.
She was fifth in the first performance at 18.650 and jumped to third in the second performance at 18.196.
Garijo was 10th in the pole bending average at 49.445. She knocked down a pole in the first performance for a time of 27.886, but improved to third place in the second performance at 21.559.
Garijo leads the season-long standings in barrel racing and is second in breakaway roping.
Lexi Garijo was 18th in the barrel racing average with times of 19.429 and 19.038, respectively, and 38th in pole bending.
Emma Garijo is currently third in the all-around standings and Lexi Garijo is seventh.
Garijo is currently on top of top of the season-long pole bending standings by 43 points.
Battle Mountain’s Ayers wins goat tying
Battle Mountain’s Jolena Ayers claimed the top spot in goat tying with an average time of 19.240.
She placed third in the opening performance at 9.600 and was the runner-up in the second performance in a time of 9.64. In addition, Ayers was 30th in pole bending. Ayers is 15th in the all-around standings.
Amelia Lancaster had two strong top-10 finishes to place sixth in barrel racing at 37.522.
She was seventh in the first performance at 18.768 and eighth in the second performance with a time of 18.754.
Lancaster was in the top-10 twice in breakaway roping to place seventh with an average at 10.420. She respective times of 5.17 and 5.25 in her performances.
Lancaster put in performances of 23.384 and 22.470 to place fifth in the pole bending average at 44.854.
Lancaster and partner Jarrett Peek from Fallon also finished in the top-10 in the team roping average.
Italy Jo Holman posted a second-place finish in the first performance of barrel racing at 18.229 to help her finish eighth in the average. Holman knocked down two barrels in the second performance to finish with a time of 29.913 and an average of 48.142.
Holman was seventh in the pole bending average at 48.517, which included winning the second performance with a time of 21.331. However, she knocked down a pole in the first performance to stop the clock at 27.186 with the five-second penalty.
Gracie Lou Holman was eighth in the breakaway roping average. After missing her calf in the opening performance, she bounced back to place third in the second performance in a time of 3.15.
Lancaster and Desi Coombs are third and fourth in the season barrel race standings, Coombs is fourth in breakaway roping and Lancaster sixth. Ayers is third in goat tying and sixth in pole bending and Italy Jo Holman is third in pole bending.
Matti DeLong wins junior high girls breakaway,
goat tying; Byrd tops ribbon roping
At the junior high level, Humboldt County’s Matti DeLong won the girls breakaway average at 7.29, after sweeping both performances. She had times of 4.18 and 3.11, respectively.
DeLong also claimed the top spot in girls goat tying with an average of 19.820. She led the way in the opening performance at 9.55 and was the runner-up in the second performance eat 10.270.
DeLong and partner Bryce Silva from Fernley tied for team roping average win. They were third in the first performance and won the second performance at 11.760.
DeLong won the first performance of barrel racing at 18.945 but ran in to trouble in the second performance and was seventh in the average. DeLong placed 10th in ribbon roping and 11th pole bending.
Huntley Byrd won both performances of ribbon roping with times of 8.46 and 19.550 to win the average.
She was fifth in pole bending, including winning the second performance in a time of 21.524. She placed seventh in breakaway roping, 11th in goat tying and 15th in barrel racing.
Taylor Hill and Shailee Robinson were fifth and 21st in barrel racing, Bryce Fears and Lane Byrd placed ninth and 13th in boys breakaway roping and Lane Byrd and Bryce Fears were fourth and 15th in boys goat tying.
Lane Byrd and Battle Mountain’s Jorja Mashburn turned in a top-five finish in ribbon roping.
Louise DeLong and Hill were fifth and 15th in girls breakaway roping and Louise DeLong and Hill were 18th and 19th in girls goat tying.
Battle Mountain’s Landry Meiman was second in barrel racing, while Mashburn was 10th and Gracie Mashburn 22nd. Gracie Mashburn also placed sixth in pole bending
Eli Lancaster placed second in chute dogging, which included winning the first performance with a time of 2.69 and he was sixth in boys breakaway roping.
The fall season concludes this weekend in Overton with the Moapa rodeo. The spring season is set to start on Feb. 18-10 in Pahrump.
The Nevada Junior High/High School Finals Rodeo is set for May 26-30, 2022 in Winnemucca. The Junior High National Finals will be in Perry, Ga., from June 19-25, 2022.
The Silver State International Rodeo returns to Winnemucca from June 30-July 7, 2022, and the National High School Finals Rodeo takes place in Gillette, Wyo., from July 17-23, 2022.
