RENO — For the third time in his career, Nevada junior Brandon Talton has been named a semifinalist for the Lou Groza Collegiate Place-Kicker Award presented by the Orange Bowl, the Palm Beach County Sports Commission announced recently.
Talton is one of 20 semifinalists, and one of five from the Mountain West, who was included on the list for the 2021 award, which is given annually to the nation’s top place-kicker.
Brandon Talton moved into third in program history with 53 made field goals after going 3-for-3 against UNLV.
Talton’s performance against UNLV also earned him Mountain West Special Teams Player of the Week for the second time this season.
Talton kicked a 52-yard field goal which is the longest this season and second longest of his career (56, 2019). It marked the fourth perfect kicking-game of the season for Talton.
His 15 total points against UNLV tied a season-high set at Boise State on Oct. 2 (4-4 FG, 3-3 PAT), which was the first time he received the Mountain West Special Teams Player of the Week honor this season.
Talton has 83 total points this year to bring his career total to 246, which is sixth all-time at Nevada.
is 53 field goals are third all-time, trailing Marty Zendejas (first; 72) and Tony Zendejas (second; 70) in career field goals with the Wolf Pack.
The junior from Vacaville, California, has made 17 of 21 field-goal attempts this season. The 17 made FG ties him for eighth on the all-time single-season field goals list in Nevada football history.
Talton is third in the nation in made field goals (17) and third in the nation in field goals per game (2.12).
Semifinalists will be voted on by a panel of more than 100 FBS head coaches, SIDs, media members, former Groza finalists, and current NFL kickers to select the three finalists.
The finalists will be announced on Nov. 23 and honored at the 30th annual Lou Groza Collegiate Place-Kicker Awards Virtual Awards Celebration, streamed live on Dec. 8 on lougrozaaward.com.
The same panel then selects the winner, who will be announced live on ESPN at the Home Depot College Football Awards on Dec. 9.
