Pershing County football closes season in Yerington

The Pershing County High School football season ended with a 49-6 loss against Yerington on Friday in the first round of the NIAA 2A State Championships in Yerington.

“Yerington jumped on us early and never looked back,” said PCHS coach Mike Brooks. “We didn’t get any plays rolling until the second quarter offensively.”

That’s when senior QB Devin Moura rushed for a touchdown, bringing the score to 26-6, with the Mustangs trailing.

“Defensively, we tried some new things and the Lions were a little too quick for us,” Brooks continued. “They’re a good team and were able to execute.”

The Mustangs end the year at 5-4, overall, and 4-3 in the 2A Northern. Moura, Diego Gonzalez, Brayden Wagner, Ashton Nolf, Mariano Gomez, Nick Flores and Jose Jimenez hung up their helmets for the last time in their high school careers.

“Thanks to the seniors for the years they put into the program and allowing us to coach them and be part of their lives,” said Brooks.

Most of the team move on to either wrestling or basketball, both due to begin soon.
