Pershing County volleyball team heads to Northern 2A Regional Championships

Last Thursday, the PCHS volleyball team played the final game of their regular season. They traveled to Reno and beat the Coral Academy Falcons in three sets, 25-14, 25-16, 25-14.

With the win, Pershing County improves to 12-8-1, overall, and 10-3 in the 2A Northern.

“We played tough to a consistent and improved Falcon team. Coral Academy has improved so much that I’m rooting for them to be a very competitive team in the next couple of years,” said coach Monica Halverson.

Thursday was the Falcons’ senior night and they included the Mustangs in the festivities. Coral gave roses to Aledda Sam, Bela Rosas, Hannah Montes and Presley Burrows, Pershing’s seniors. They had yellow daisies for the rest of the Mustangs.

“That is awesome sportsmanship and something I will incorporate for our next season,” said Halverson.

But, first things first. The Northern 2A Regional Championships will be in Battle Mountain this weekend, Nov. 5-6.

“I have confidence that my team will be mentally and physically tough throughout the playoffs. They are determined to get to the state competition,” said the coach.

For round one, Pershing County plays West Wendover (3-10) on Friday at 7 p.m. If Pershing County wins, they’ll play Yerington (11-3) on Saturday at 1:45 p.m.

The stakes will be high.

“If we beat Yerington, we will automatically be going to state,” the coach explains. “We are going all the way. Our goal is to bring home a league championship this weekend and a state trophy the following weekend.”

Battle Mountain takes on North Tahoe at 5 p.m. on Friday in the other first-round match-up. The winner plays Incline on Saturday at noon. The championship is set for 4p.m. on Saturday.

The two finalists advance to the NIAA State Championships at Faith Lutheran High School in Las Vegas on Nov. 12-13.
