Mustangs fall to Battle Mountain; Yerington wins 2A regional tournament

Last Friday and Saturday, baseball players from Incline, Yerington, Silver Springs, West Wendover and Battle Mountain met in Lovelock.

They all wanted a shot at the Northern 2A Regional Baseball Championship, hosted by the Mustangs.

The weather was unseasonably cold and wintry with sporadic rain, especially on Friday.

Spectators huddled under blankets.

The Incline Highlanders started the weekend off by beating the Silver Stage Nighthawks (3-2).

The Battle Mountain Longhorns defeated Pershing County 15-0.

Battle Mountain’s Marcos Jimenez recorded the win for the Longhorns.

He allowed zero hits and zero runs over two innings, striking out six and walking one. Anthony Silva  threw two innings in relief out of the bullpen.

Blake Barter took the loss for the Mustangs, surrendering six runs on three hits over two innings. He struck out four and walked one.

With the losses, Pershing County and SilverStage’s baseball seasons screeched to a halt.

The Mustangs took their loss in stride and headed over to the softball field to watch the girls beat Incline.

Pershing County finished the 2021 season at 1-13.

On Saturday, it came down to Yerington, West Wendover, Incline and Battle Mountain.

Yerington beat Incline 15-0 and West Wendover knocked off Battle Mountain 13-7.

Finally, Yerington won the championship game against Wendover (11-0). The Lions are the new regional champs.

It was the last high school baseball game for five Pershing seniors – Raul Rincon, Timothy Fecht, Blake Barter, Jordan Gentry and Logan Oberman. They’re now prepping for graduation day.
