For twenty-nine years, the Joshua L. Anderson Memorial Foundation has been awarding college scholarships to Northern Nevada students who played high school baseball or softball, while achieving academic excellence and maintaining a high level of community and school activities.
The Foundation has awarded $1,040,000 in scholarships to 338 students/athletes from 33 different high schools since its inception in 1993.
The Foundation has selected 15 new recipients, awarding $55,500 in scholarships for 2021.
The 2021 recipients are: AnnJoLee Field from Virginia City High School, Bryson Horton from McQueen High School, Maycee LaFleur from Smith Valley High School, Amaya Mendeguia from Carson High School, Kobe Morgan from Carson High School, Ashlynn Newkirk from Battle Mountain High School, Elliotte Phinney from Galena High School, Ty Polson from Damonte Ranch High School, Matthew Revels from Galena High School, Landon Scarlata from Mineral High School, Jacob Williamson from Galena High School, Taylor Wulfing from Smith Valley High School and Gavin Zappe from Reed High School.
Each scholarship award is $3,500.
The Joshua L. Anderson Foundation also awarded the Larry Menante Memorial Scholarship ($5,000) to Alexis Schweer from Elko High School and the Dan Rechenmacher Memorial Scholarship ($5,000) to Kyleigh Mendes from Fernley High School. Both scholarships are given to students who have overcome great odds making it into college.
Josh Anderson was a 1991 graduate of Reno High School.
He played baseball at Reno National Little League, Reno West Babe Ruth, Reno High School, Reno Knights American Legion and DeAnza College in Cupertino, Calif.
Anderson died on June 25, 1992, of Sudden Death Syndrome shortly after pitching in the University of Nevada, Reno summer baseball tournament.
