Pershing County track and field finishes strong

Between events, the athletes bundled up as the wind blew and the day turned downright wintery.

The NIAA Northern 2A Region Championships took place at Eleanor Lemaire Junior High School in Battle Mountain on Saturday, May 22.

Pershing County sent 11 athletes to the competition.

More than half were seniors, competing for the last time in their high school careers.

Matt and Cassidie Fuller stepped up as the boy’s and girl’s coaches this season.

Seniors bring

home the gold

Dalton McNeff brought home a first-place medal in the triple jump with a leap of 38 feet, 10 inches.

He placed fourth in the high and long jumps.

Connie Kersnowski placed fourth in the long jump, second in the 300-meter hurdles and third in the 100-meter hurdles.

Julia Steele competed in the 100 and 200-meter dash, setting a personal record in the 200-meter race.

Cheyeanne Diaz competed in the 100 and 200-meter dash, setting a personal best in the 200 meters.

Victor Flores threw the shot put and discus. He set a new personal best in shot put.

Zeke Jackson set a seasonal record in the 400-meters.

Underclassmen hope to compete in

state next year

Expect to see the five underclassmen at the state competition next year, if there is one.

Beginning with the juniors, Kylee Fuller won the 1,600 and 3200- meter races, setting seasonal records in both.

Presley Burrows also had a big day. She placed first in the triple jump and second in the high jump and 200-meter dash.

Diego Gonzalez competed in the 400-meter and 800-meter races, setting a new personal best in the 400 meters.

Kaylen Halverson, a sophomore, placed second in discus and fourth in shot put.

Freshman Rylee Renfroe set a personal best in the 100-meter dash and placed fourth in the 100-meter hurdles.

Jackson, McNeff, Flores and Gonzalez placed second in the boys 4x200, just fractions of a second behind North Tahoe.

Renfroe, Diaz, Steele and Kersnowski teamed up for the girl’s 4x200 relay. They placed fourth in a close race behind North Tahoe, Incline and Yerington.

“Our regional track meet was a good one,” said Steele. “Every person on our team medaled and would have won a spot at state. It was one for the books.”
