Pershing County baseball hosts West Wendover and North Tahoe

Three of the four baseball games the Pershing  County High School baseball team played over the weekend were close.

The Mustangs were ahead or tied at several points.

On Friday, Pershing County hosted West Wendover. The Wolverines won both games of the doubleheader (16-1, 10-7).

West Wendover’s only loss so far this season is to the undefeated Battle Mountain Longhorns. Pershing made the Wolverines work hard for the win.

The Mustangs had a big second inning with six runs. They captured the lead when Noel Zaldivar drew a walk, scoring one run.  Pershing scored six runs in the second inning. Head coach Will Barter waved the runners along as they raced toward home.

The game was tied at seven, with West Wendover batting in the top of the seventh when a Wolverine doubled on a 1-2 count, scoring the run and grabbing the win.

Blake Barter recorded the loss for the Mustangs. The pitcher allowed three hits and four runs over one-and- two-thirds innings, striking out three and walking one. Barter, Tim Fecht and Blake Burrows all pitched over the weekend. Wyatt Diaz handled the catching.

On Saturday, the Mustangs came back to host the North Tahoe Lakers in a doubleheader.

Pershing County lost both games – 15-10 and 8-13. Along the way, the competitions became tugs of war. A thunderstorm produced flashes of lightning, and both teams showed flashes of their capabilities.

In the first game, the Mustangs captured the lead in the second inning when Jordan Gentry singled on a 0-1 count, scoring one run. The Mustangs had another big second inning with six runs.

Tim Fecht, Blake Barter and Gentry all knocked in runs for Pershing. Barter went 3 for 4 at the plate to lead the Mustangs in hits.

The team, coaches and families said goodbye to the seniors, sending them off with balloons and wishes for their futures. The seniors include Raul Rincon, Tim Fecht, Blake Barter, Jordan Gentry, Logan Oberman, Jacob Thompson and Ethan Rhodes.

The coaches are proud of how the boys played and looking forward to the regional competition.

It takes place in Lovelock on  May 21-22.
