The best scores of the year for the 3A boys golfers took place on Tuesday, April 4, in Fernley.
Five of the six schools broke 400 on the day, with the Vaqueros shooting a season-best 348 to win on its home course. Elko was second at 352, while the Buckaroos were third with a season-best round of 355. Spring Creek (389), Churchill County (397) and Dayton 423 rounded out the team scores.
Ferrnley’s Isaac O’Neill was the low medalist with a 2-over par round of 74. Elko’s Kaden Konakis and Lowry’s Cal Peters each shot 80, but Konakis was awarded second place on the scorecard tiebreaker. Spring Creek’s Kevin Thompson was fourth overall at 82 and Lowry freshman Landon Esquivel carded a career-best 86 to place fifth in the individual standings.
Peters and Esquivel are tied for fifth place in the season-long individual standings, which decide the all-league first and second teams.
Lowry junior Hunter Smith carded his best high school score with a 93 and freshman Trenton Mullis had the final kept score for the Buckaroos at 93. Coda Nichols (100) and Seamus Maloon (101) rounded out the scores for Lowry.
Fernley leads the season-long point standings for the 3A East championship with 17 points.
Lowry and Elko are tied for second with 13 and Spring Creek (11) is fourth. Churchill County (6) and Dayton (3) are fifth and sixth, respectively.
Lowry hosted its 3A East tournament on Tuesday and results were not available at press time.
The 3A East season concludes on Wednesday, May 19, at Ruby View Golf Course in Elko.
