LETTER TO THE EDITOR --Response to Claycomb and air rifles

As an animal lover I hate to admit I read your column.

Your piece on air guns really irritated me. You say pellet guns are great for small game hunting — what kind of small game are you talking about? Wounding mice and sparrows? It's a simple matter of arithmetic. A typical high quality .177 caliber air rifle fires a 14 grain bullet at about 800 feet per second. That is exactly half the power of a .22 Short that fires a 29 grain bullet at 800 FPS. An air rifle is not powerful enough to hunt anything.
