Pershing County track and field competes in Battle Mountain Invitational

They’re headed for the finish line. The Pershing County track team competed in the Battle Mountain Invitational on Friday, May 7.

“The meet was fun for the athletes,” said Coach Matt Fuller. “A few set personal records.” He and Cassidie Fuller stepped up as coaches this season. Matt Fuller also coached the soccer team through yet another successful year.

In personal bests, the athletes push themselves to the max by topping their previous bests. 

On the girl’s side, Cheyeanne Diaz, Rylee Renfroe and Julia Steele ran the 100 and 200-meter dashes. Diaz placed second in the 200-meters (30.09). Steele set a seasonal record at 34.02. 

Kylee Fuller placed second in the 800-meter race at 2:46.0, a PR. She won the 3200-meter race at 13:56.9.

Freshman Rylee Renfroe placed third in the 100-meter hurdles (21.75). Meanwhile, sophomore Kaylen Halverson handled things on the field. She threw the shot put 24’6’’ and the discus 76 feet, a PR. Halverson placed second in the discus throw.

For the boys, Diego Gonzalez won the 800-meter race at a speed of 2:23.1, a PR. He placed fourth in the 400-meters (59.68). Zeke Jackson set a seasonal record of 1:03.7 in the 400-meter. He also cleared 12’9.5 feet in the long jump.

Victor Flores PR’d in the discus throw (87’3’’).

Dalton McNeff won the triple jump (39’2’’), a PR. 

McNeff placed third in the long jump (18’5’’) and high jump (5’2’’), a seasonal record.

The girls 4x200 relay team finished in 2:09.5. It included Diaz, Steele, Fuller and Renfroe. The boys 4x200 consisted of Jackson, McNeff, Flores and Gonzalez. They finished in 2:50, a minute behind Battle Mountain (1:50).

“Both Pershing relay teams did well and did a great job on their handoffs,” said Fuller. “They are excited to compete in the regionals in a couple of weeks.”

The regionals take place on Sat., May 22, in Battle Mountain.
