McClary wins twice for BMHS track and field team

The Battle Mountain High School track and field team turned in a strong performance this past weekend at the Ward Coates Invitational that featured a number of first-place finishes.

Declan McClary set a personal best in the pole vault at 10 feet, 6 inches to win the event and the senior won the triple jump with a personal-best leap of 35-3. In addition, McClary was eighth in the 200 meters at 26.56 seconds.  

Nolan Chopp earned the top spot in the discus with a personal-best throw of 116-11 and the junior was the runner-up in the shot put with a toss of 38-4.

 Senior teammate Joey Huhta won the shot put with a throw of 39-11, which was a personal best and Huhta was second in the discus at 112-2. Chopp placed 12th in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.96.

The 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams took home first place, while the 4x20 relay was second.

Isaiah Powell finished second in the 400 meters with a time of 54.00 seconds and the senior placed third in the long jump. David Traweek placed third in the 3,200 meters at 14:35.84, which was a personal best and the sophomore was sixth in the 1,600 meters.

Aydan Samuelson placed third in the shot put at 37-6 and 12th in the discus and Ben Drisbo finished third in the discus with a personal-best throw of 105-1.   

Sophomore Sean Bengoa finished fourth in the high jump, clearing the bar at 5-2, which was a personal best. 

He placed fifth in the long jump with a mark of 17-9 — a personal best and he added a sixth-place finish in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.09. 

Sean Scherer finished third in the pole vault, clearing the bar at 80 and Jimmy Cox was fifth in the 800 meters in a time of 2:46.12. Julian Sosa was ninth in the 200 meters at 27.24, 11th in the long jump (15-7) and 13th in the 10-meter dash (13.40).  

On the girls side, Jolena Ayers won the 800 meters in a time of 2:49.56 and the sophomore was third in the 100-meterdash with a time of 13.59 — personal best and? fourth in the triple jump at 29-0.  

McKenzie Burkhart set a personal best in the triple at 14-6 to finish fifth and the junior was 19th in the long jump with a mark of 6-8. Emily Lisabelle finished fifth in the 1,600 meters (7:17.93) and seventh in the 800 meters (3:27.36), which was a personal best.

Yezzel Guizar was seventh in the long jump at 10-7.5 and Alejandra Argueta was 17th in the long jump. The 4x100 relay was fourth.
