The Battle Mountain High School baseball team collected a 33-3 rout of rival Pershing County and split a doubleheader with West Wendover this past week to improve to 5-4 overall and 4-3 in league play.
Against Pershing County on Tuesday, April 27, in Lovelock, Battle Mountain jumped out to a 3-0 lead after an inning of play. However, the Mustangs cut that lead to s ingle run in the bottom of the second inning, scoring a pair of runs.
The Longhorns scored three runs apiece in the third, fourth and fifth inning to go in front 12-3. Battle Mountain put the game out of reach with 21 runs in the top of the sixth inning.
Battle Mountain had 33 hits in the contest, with Anthony Silva collecting six hits to go with eight RBI and seven runs scored. Sage Holte was 5-for-5 on the day with four runs scored and two RBI.
Marcos Jimenez had four hits, four RBI and four runs scored, while Pablo Piedra, Jr Vazquez, Jose Guizar, Anthony Del Rio, Hector Lopez-Zuniga, Eric Fernandez, Mikey Spring and Wiatt Kelly each had two hits.
De Rio threw a complete game to earn the win on the pitching mound. The junior allowed three runs (zero earned) on four hits. He struck out 12 and walked one.
Wolverines knock off Longhorns in
series opener
Battle Mountain took on West Wendover in a doubleheader for the second time in two weeks. The Wolverines’ pitching duo of Keegan Neilson and Isaac Gonzalez kept the Longhorns at bay in game on Friday, winning 4-1. Battle Mountain managed just six hits in the game.
West Wendover scored twice in the first inning and once more in the second to lead 3-0, when Battle Mountain got on the board in the fourth inning with its lone run. Asher Bundrock had an RBI base hit in the frame to score Vazquez. West Wendover countered with a run in the bottom of the fourth inning to account for all the scoring.
Vazquez, Jimenez, Del Rio, Bundrock, Holte and Silva each had one hit.
Del Rio got the start and worked 3.1 innings and allowed three runs on five hits. He struck out seven and walked one. Jimenez threw the final 2.2 innings, giving up one hit, while striking out four.
BMHS scores five in the ninth to
win night cap
The nightcap of the doubleheader proved to be another good one with Battle Mountain rallying to win 11-6 in nine innings.
The Longhorns led 5-1 after four innings of play, only to see the Wolverines scores two runs apiece in the fifth and sixth innings to go in front 6-5.
Battle Mountain sent the game into extra innings with a single run in the seventh inning, as West Wendover could not answer in the bottom of the seventh.
The Longhorns pulled away in the ninth inning to secure the victory.
Vasquez, Jimenez and Del Rio each had three hits and Brock Bullock, Guizar and Fernandez had two hits apiece.
Silva started and threw 7.1 innings, allowing six runs on 10 hits. He struck out 16 and walked four. Jimenez earned the win in 1.2 innings of relief, giving up one hit. He struck out three and walked two.
Battle Mountain hosted Pershing County on Tuesday and results were not available at press time.
The Longhorns are back home on Saturday to play Silver Stage in a doubleheader at 11 a.m.
