This past Friday,, the PCHS Track team headed to the Ward Coates Invitational at Elko High School. Athletes from several schools met on the track.
They included Pershing County, Battle Mountain, Carlin, McDermitt, Eureka, Jackpot, Lund, Owyhee, Round Mountain, Wells, West Wendover and White Pine.
Matt and Cassidie Fuller are wrapping up their first year as Pershing’s head track coaches. Mike Brooks, Dave McLean, Steve Clark and Lance Condie lend a hand with the field events and hurdles.
On Friday, Dalton McNeff, Zeke Jackson, Victor Flores and Diego Gonzalez won the 4x200 relay against Battle Mountain.
The Mustangs clocked in at 1:49. The Longhorns finished 1:50.
“It was pretty close in the mid legs, but luckily we had a strong start and a strong finish to help make up some time,” said McNeff.
Flores set a new personal record in shot put with a throw of 26 feet and five inches.
He also set a personal best in the discus competition at 86 feet, 4 inches.
McNeff tied with Battle Mountain’s Declan McClary for first place in the triple jump.
They each leaped 35 feet and three inches. McNeff and Zeke Jackson also competed in the long jump. Jackson had a personal best at 12-9.
On the girls side, Rylee Renfroe, Julia Steele, Kylee Fuller and Presley Burrows won the 4x200 relay race against Wells.
The 4x100 relay team of Kersnowski, Renfroe, Steele and Diaz placed third out of six.
“This track meet was a lot of learning,” said Steele. “We tried new things. We’re going to continue to get better and faster in the relays.”
Diaz and Steele pushed through the 100 and 200-meter dash.
Presley Burrows medaled in both. She also went for the gold in the 400 meters at 66.90, outrunning four opponents.
In distance running, Burrows and Kylee Fuller placed first and second in the 1,600-meter race. Fuller won the 3,200-meter in fourteen minutes and 12 seconds (14:12.81), ahead of two determined White Pine athletes.
Kersnowski placed first in the 100-meter hurdles and second in the 300 meters. She also competed in the long jump. Rylee Renfroe PR’d in the 100-meter hurdles at 20.18.
Kaylen Halverson set new personal records in both shot put (25-10) and discus (75-7).
She placed third in the discus throw.
Next, Pershing County goes to the Battle Mountain Invitational on Friday
. It will be held at Eleanore Lemaire Junior High on Tim Knight Field.
This time, Pahranagat Valley and McDermitt join the lineup.
