The PCHS volleyball team traveled to Silver Springs last Tuesday and won three of four sets (25-21, 17-25, 25-15 and 25-22) against the Silver Stage Nighthawks.
“With continued teamwork and pushing themselves to get each point, my girls earned this win,” said coach Monica Halverson. Coaches Nancy Meissner and Leah Holland stepped up for Coach Halverson due to a family emergency.
“We’re all in this together, and I have a fantastic coaching staff,” said Halverson.
Earlier this season, Pershing County traveled to Yerington.
This past Friday, it was Lovelock’s turn to host the 2A state champs.
Although Lovelock lost (16-25, 23-25 and 23-25), the coach saw improvement in the team’s overall play against the Lions.
“We had some awesome hustle plays, but fundamental mistakes cost us the game,” she said. “We started fighting back but couldn’t retake the lead. I always want the girls to fight hard and go to five games but they just lost steam.”
The volleyball team ended its week at the Venturacci Park in Fallon against the Oasis Bighorns.
Pershing County won in three sets (25-16, 26-24, 26-24). Nonetheless, the coach found the game hard to watch.
“We showed a lot of hustle but got owned when we started celebrating before the ball was dead, and they out-hustled us and scored a point three times,” she said. “It’s a hard pill to swallow when it happens three times. My girls played down and did not play to their full potential. I’m glad we finished in three because we are so much better than the performance we had during that game.”
Coach Halverson hopes Pershing County walked away with a life lesson.
“Never get a big head and always play to win, point by point,” she said. “I’m proud of my team for finishing off this long week on a positive note.”
Volleyball players demonstrate growth
According to the coach, Kaydance Happy played her most consistent serving game of the season against Oasis, with an ace serve, a dig, two assists, five kills and two blocks.
“She served the points of the game and made the other team work for the ball,” said the coach. “Kaydance has also greatly improved her blocking game. She’s more confident and now goes after the block instead of waiting for it to come to her.”
In the Oasis win, Presley Burrows delivered one ace serve, seven digs and ten kills. Cheyeanne Diaz added an ace serve, four digs, two assists and two kills.
Aledda Sam had four ace serves, eight digs, one assist and three kills.
Senicka Happy contributed three digs and two kills. Kaylen Halverson pitched in an ace serve, three digs and 17 assists. Libero Andrea Canchola had 10 digs.
“It is fun to watch their learning processes,” said the coach.
JV volleyball plays three matches;
wins one
The JV volleyball team also played three matches this past week.
First, they traveled to Silver Springs to play the Silver Stage Nighthawks. Pershing lost (25-20, 18-25, 7-15).
“Our girls played well the first game. In our second and third games we struggled with confidence and consistency,” said coach Nancy Meissner.
This past Friday, Lovelock hosted Yerington JV, losing 10-25 and 16-25.
“Yerington played well, setting the ball up often,” said Coach Meissner. “We struggled to find our momentum in the first game. We played more aggressively in the second.”
The week ended on the road with a win against Coral Academy.
“The team had a goal to work together and work for each other,” said the coach. “Our girls played well.” They won (25-21, 25-15).
Morgan Swindlehurst was the top server for all three matches. Taylor Garland was the leading passer and attacker throughout the week.
Upcoming games
On Tuesday, the volleyball team traveled to Battle Mountain.
Results were not available at press time. This Friday, they’ll host West Wendover.
They’ll round out the 2021 season by hosting Coral Academy (April 6) and Incline (April 9).
JV plays at 4 p.m. Varsity follows at 5 p.m.
“With two weeks left in the season, we’re going to push ourselves to play some quality volleyball,” said Halverson. “We never really lose, but learn the things we need to change or fix to do better next time.”
