The Battle Mountain High School volleyball team knocked off Wells and West Wendover last week.
On Tuesday, March 23, the Lady Longhorns swept the Leopards 25-19, 25-10 and 25-16 in a non-conference match-up.
On Friday, Battle Mountain hit the road and beat West Wendover in four sets, 25-20, 16-25, 26-24 and 25-14.
Against Wells, Battle Mountain scored four of the first five points in the opening set on the strength of kills by Lolly Argueta and Addi Slaybaugh. The Leopards came back to tie set at 4, 5,6 and 8, when Battle Mountain back in front at 9-8 on ace by Slaybaugh where the ball hit the top of the net and fell to the open floor.
The two squads traded points for a bit, when the Lady Longhorns grabbed a 19-17 lead after a kill by Argueta. Slaybaugh added two aces at the end of the set to give the Lady Longhorns the win.
Battle Mountain showed off its strong serving to open the second set, with Marena Fuller and Brynnlee Freeman, each recording an ace within the first seven points of the set. Shea Jones got into the act with three straight aces to put Battle Mountain up 11-3 and forcing Wells to call a time out.
Aylea Ramos and Slaybaugh added kills late in the set, to go with a tip by Ramos as well. Jones capped of the set with her fourth ace.
The Lady Longhorns used a block by Argueta and another ace by Jones to open a 5-2 advantage in the third set.
Sandwiched by a kill from Freeman, Slaybaugh added three aces midway through the set to put the Lady Longhorns up 13-5. Once again, Wells called a timeout to stop the momentum.
Wells closed the gap to 18-13, when the Lady Longhorns got a combined three aces from Jones and Ramos to close out the match.
Battle Mountain hosted Pershing County on Tuesday and results were not available at press time.
The Lady Longhorns travel to Yerington on Friday and return home on Saturday to play Silver Stage at noon.
