The Pershing County football team beat Silver Stage 42-6 on the road on Saturday afternoon.
So far this season, already half over, the Mustangs remain undefeated at 3-0.
“Our kids bounced back after a grueling game last week,” said coach Mike Brooks, referring to the competition against Incline.
Pershing County pulled off the 24-21 win with a field goal in double overtime on Joe Yanni Field.
Jessy Gonzalez, a graduating senior, rushed for 102 yards and had two touchdowns. Raul Rincon added 130 yards and two touchdowns.
“Colton (Wanner), Aariano (Gomez) and Haydon (Burrows) also had nice games carrying the ball,” said the coach. “Defensively, we were hurt a little bit through the air, but Augustin Lopez finished with three interceptions, a highlight of the day.”
It was Silver Stage’s season-opener. They now head to Reno to play CASR.
Longhorns head to Mustang territory
Meanwhile, to the delight of the home crowd, Pershing County hosts rival school Battle Mountain this Friday.
The JV plays at 4:30. Varsity follows at 7 p.m.
The Longhorns walloped West Wendover 42-0 on the road on March. 12.
They hosted Yerington this past Saturday. Despite an attempt at a fourth-quarter comeback, Battle Mountain lost 7-6 in the defensive war.
Yerington scored at the end of the first half on a rushing touchdown.
Battle Mountain had a couple of chances to score in the first half but saw drives end on downs.
Unfortunately, in the second half Yerington lost their quarterback due to an injury.
In true nail-biter fashion, Battle Mountain scored with four minutes left in the game but missed the two-point conversion.
Head coach, Mitch Domalga, recently put in a new offense and they are still in the learning stages.
JV boys continue to improve
The JV boys, coached by Dan Murphy, lost 24-26 on the road against Spring Creek.
The coaches see improvement with each game.
“The more playing time we get, the brighter the future is for the Mustangs,” said Murphy. “We are excited to be playing.”
