Obituary: Douglas McLean

Douglas McLean, known to many as “Pops”, 79 passed away on March 12, 2021.

He is preceded in death by his lovely wife Cecelia McLean.

He is survived by his son David and (Valdine) McLean and grandchildren Bridgett and Randolph McLean.

He grew up in Long Beach, California. Shortly after graduating high school he enlisted in the United States Air Force becoming a Communications Repairman then eventually working up to Manpower Management Officer.

He was sharp with a pencil and in retirement took on various jobs helping companies become more efficient.

Doug and Cecelia have called many places home as is such cases for many in a military career.

In each of those places, the two were active volunteers in youth sports.

He initially retired in England where he made his mark as a Lions Club member and officer as well as a Football Coach for several teams: the Doncaster Jaguars, the Doncaster Mustangs, the Leeds Cougars, and the Barnsley Bears in which they achieved a National Championship.  He has albums full of his football coaching memories and often tells the many stories of each of his players.  You know who are, he was very fond of your hard work and achievements, whether they be great or small.

As grandchildren were born, Doug and Cecelia made that “leap” across the pond to be a part of their son’s family in Lovelock, NV.

Without hesitation, Pops became busy supporting the Mustangs by assisting in track and supporting the football program with his statistician wizardry.

He joined the local Lions Chapter as well as the American Legions in which he has served countless hours participating in volunteer projects and serving in different leadership roles in both groups.  Pops will be greatly missed.

A full military service will be held at the Northern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Fernley, NV on March 26th at 8:30 am, where he will be interred with his beloved wife Cecilia.

Please be advised that this is an outdoor service, there is a limit of 50 people within the pavilion area with covid distancing and masks requirements.

A Luncheon will be provided in the Meisekothen (Catholic) Hall in Lovelock following the services at 12:00 noon.  Again, with Covid — there is a capacity for 100, but we will have outdoor tables for overflow if necessary.

In leu of flowers, please consider donating to either the Lovelock American Legions or the Lovelock Lions Club, both organizations do a fine job for our community and the youth which are near and dear to his heart.
