The Pershing County High School volleyball team split road matches this past week.
On Tuesday, Mach. 16, the Lady Mustangs beat Coral Academy at the Silver State Volleyball Club in Reno 25-10, 25-19, 25-14.
On Saturday, they traveled to Tahoe to play Incline. The Mustangs lost 21-25, 25-22, 25-19, 30-28.
On Tuesday, March. 23, Pershing County went back on the road against the Silver Stage Nighthawks.
Results were not available at press time.
Lady Mustangs beat Falcons on road
According to Coach Monica Halverson, the Mustangs set the tempo against Coral Academy.
“Coral has always been fun to play because they do not quit,” she said. “We were able to set up plays, work together as a team and play like Mustangs should. When we have a good serving game, we play better all around.”
Kaydance Happy led Pershing County with seven ace serves. Presley Burrows had five kills, and two ace serves. Cheyeanne Diaz added four ace serves and three tip kills.
Aledda Sam had six ace serves and four kills. Kaylen Halverson contributed 12 assists and three ace serves. Libero Andrea Canchola continues to grow into her role.
“Andrea is doing an awesome job, and her confidence grows with each game,” said the coach.
Pershing County
falls to Incline
On Saturday, the Mustangs came up short against the Incline Highlanders.
“We lost 1-3 to a team that we should have beat in three sets,” said Coach Halverson, chalking the loss up to a lack of communication, among other factors. “My girls created many side-outs by making fundamental mistakes and not talking to each other.”
In the fourth set, the Mustangs showed their will to succeed.
“It went back and forth for a solid period of time, and to go to the fifth game we needed to pull out the win. That did not happen and we were disappointed in ourselves for not fighting harder. We allowed them to take the win from us,” said the coach.
Pershing County hosts Yerington
on Friday
According to the most recent volleyball protocols, each player has six admission tickets to distribute as they choose.
Spectators must pay admission at the door. For the first time this year, officials will allow up to 50 students to sit in the gym’s student section.
“It will make a huge difference,” says Halverson. “And, it’s against Yerington, so that will help us out so much. Beating Yerington in our own house is my goal.” JV starts at 4 p.m. Varsity follows at 5 p.m.
Pershing County lost 3-1 to the Lions in Yerington at the season-opener. Since then, the Mustangs have played hard and look forward to a rematch on their stomping grounds.
Pershing County ends the week in Fallon against the Oasis Bighorns on Saturday, Mar. 27.
JV continues to improve, says coach
The fortunes of the JV volleyball team mirrored the varsity squad. Tuesday, they beat Coral Academy in two sets (25-19, 25-17). Coach Nancy Meissner reports that Lovelock set the ball up, hit aggressively and defended well.
“Our serving is improving and is quickly becoming a strong point for our team,” she said.
Pershing County did not fare as well against Incline JV. The Mustang’s freshman team lost in two sets (20-25, 18-25), although serving remained a strong point.
“They played well against a tougher team,” said Meissner.
Morgan Swindlehurst led the serving with four aces. Taylor Garland and KayLee Poffenroth each added one. Swindlehurst and Garland led the attack with two kills each.
Mady Grenz had one kill. Anna Happy contributed three setting assists.
Garland was the leading passer with help from Grenz, Poffenroth, Katie Moore and Yasmine McKinney.
