The Pershing County girl’s soccer team hosted Spring Creek JV on Saurday starting at noon.
Spectators watched from their vehicles, enjoying the springlike temperatures.
Meanwhile, the contest was anything but relaxing for Pershing County’s athletes.
The Spartans pushed them to their limits, bringing out top performances.
Senior Connie Kersnowski, easily one of the fastest players in the league, ran even faster than usual. Matuszyk describes Cora Trowbridge, a sophomore, as “one of our toughest-bodied players.”
She had to get tougher as Spring Creek JV tested Pershing County’s defense to the max.
The Mustangs lost 4-0 but gained a learning experience worth gold.
“It was a tough, fast game that helped us learn where to focus our practices,” said assistant coach Eva Matuszyk. Matt Fuller is the head coach.
Pershing County has been working on trapping, moving the ball and finding passes.
According to the coaches, Brenda Zaldivar, a senior, had great body traps against Spring Creek JV.
Hannah Gonzalez, Kylee Fuller, Tavis Hunt and Kersnowski navigated the ball into places that helped them find passes.
“Today was tough, but it showed us what we need to work on to be more successful next week,” said Matuszyk. Pershing County plays Battle Mountain at home on Wednesday.
The game starts at 5 p.m. On Friday, March 19, they’ll make the long trip to West Wendover to play the Wolverines.
As of press time, Pershing County hosts Whittell on Saturday, starting at 10 a.m.
The following week, they host Yerington on Saturday, March 27 at 10 a.m.
