After having the opening week of the shortened six-week spring season off, the Battle Mountain High School football team was finally able to get on the field last Friday in West Wendover.
The Longhorns scored all of their 42 points in the first half on their way to a 43-0 victory over the Wolverines.
“The kids played hard today,” said BMHS coach Mitch Domagala. “They have been chomping at the bit to get on the field and today they took advantage of the opportunity.”
The Battle Mountain defense made the first statement of the night, as on the second play of the game, Terrance Fetterly intercepted a pass and returned it 30 yards for a touchdown. Kobe Lake ran in the 2-point conversion to make the score 8-0.
After forcing a West Wendover fumble, Battle Mountain’s Jose Guizar added to the advantage, as he rushed for a 30 yard touchdown and the conversion failed, leaving the Longhorns ahead 14-0.
The onslaught in the first quarter continued, as the Battle Mountain defense forced West Wendover to turn the ball over on downs. The Longhorns’ offense took over again and this time it took just five plays to score, Guizar running in from eight yards out.
Once again, the conversion was no good, giving the Longhorns a 20-0 lead.
After forcing another West Wendover fumble, which was recovered by Nolan Chopp, the offensive took six plays to score.
This time, Guizar connected with Anthony Del Rio for a 36-yard touchdown pass. Declan McClary ran in the 2-point conversion, giving Battle Mountain a 28-0 advantage in the first quarter.
After trading possessions in the second quarter, the Longhorn offense took over with a 10-play, 87-yard drive.
It was a mix of pass and run culminating with Guizar reaching the end zone once again on a rushing score.
Brice Domagala caught the 2-point conversion to make the score 36-0.
Battle Mountain capped off the scoring in the second quarter, as Sean Bengoa recovered the ensuing kickoff and three plays later Guizar connected with Fetterly for the final points of the game
“We did a lot of things really good today, but there’s still a lot to clean up,” Domagala said.
Battle Mountain makes its home debut on Saturday night against Yerington at 7 p.m. The Longhorns travel to Lovelock on Friday, March 26, to face Pershing County.
