Reno homicide and robbery suspect arrested in McDermitt

On March 2, 2021, just after 4:00 a.m., 23-year-old Nicholas Silva from McDermitt, NV was arrested on felony eluding charges and is being held on charges from a homicide and subsequent robbery that occurred in Reno hours before his arrest.

Reno police reportedly responded to a shooting at approximately 1:00 a.m. at a home on the 2200 block of South Virginia Street where a man had sustained a fatal gunshot wound, the identity of the man has not yet been released.

Silva was the only suspect in the incident. He allegedly fled the scene, committed an armed robbery at a 7-11 store in south Reno just before 2 a.m., and drove to Winnemucca where he exited Interstate 80 at eastbound exit 178.

Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) deputies attempted to stop the vehicle after it exited I-80 in Winnemucca but the vehicle failed to stop and continued to drive to Highway 95 North at a high rate of speed.

HCSO had information from the Reno Police Department suggesting that the driver and suspect may be attempting to drive to the Fort McDermitt Indian Reservation.

HCSO notified the Bureau of Indian Affairs of the incident and deputies continued to follow the vehicle, which later turned into the reservation.

The vehicle was subsequently stopped; Silva was arrested without incident and booked into the Humboldt County Detention Center on felony charges of murder, robbery and evading police officers with a bail of $100,000.

Assisting agencies in the arrest included the Reno Police Department, Winnemucca Police Department, Bureau of Indian Affairs and Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office.

“I want to thank all the agencies involved in the criminal investigation which led to the arrest of Silva,” said Humboldt County Sheriff Mike Allen. “Law enforcement deputies and officers demonstrated extreme professionalism and were able to arrest Silva without further incident or injuries.”
