Lowry boys split opening matches

It was a roller coaster of a weekend for the Lowry High School boys soccer team who saw polar opposites of results in its return to action.

The Buckaroos traveled to Spring Creek on Friday and dominated the Spartans in a 7-1 win.

However, in its home-opener on Saturday, Lowry suffered a 7-1 loss to Fernley.

After warm and sunny conditions on Friday, cold and strong winds greeted Lowry and Fernley on Saturday in Winnemucca. The Buckaroos took the win in the first half and tried to use it to their advantage. Lowry moved the ball well on offense in the first half, but had bad luck, as Jordan Wirthlin and Johan Silva banged shots off the cross bar.

Wirthlin also had another good look at goal midway through the first half but could not convert.

After Lowry controlled the action for the first eight minutes, Fernley got on the board first on a penalty kick in the 9th minute.

The Vaqueros extended the lead to 2-0 in the 23rd minute, scoring on a breakaway chance.

The advantage grew to 3-0, three minutes later when Fernley converted again.

Lowry got on the board in the 37th minute on a goal by Yahir Avalos, but the deficit grew to three at halftime, as Fernley made it 4-1 in the second minute of extra time to take that same score into halftime.

It went from bad to worse for Lowry, as Fernley scored in the 54th and 60th minute to lead 6-1.

The final goal of the day was in the 79th minute.

Lowry’s home match for Friday has been moved to Dayton.

The road trip for the Buckaroos continue on Saturday in Elko.

The Buckaroos are back home on March 19-20 to play Churchill County and Spring Creek.
