Pershing County volleyball and soccer begin play on the road

The Pershing County volleyball team heads to Yerington on Friday.

They’ll play the Yerington Lions at 4 and 5 p.m. Pershing’s varsity girls are Andrea Canchola, Presley Burrows, Cheyeanne Diaz, Aledda Sam, Senicka Happy, Kaylen Halverson and Kaydance Happy.

“With only two varsity players returning from last year, it’s important we trust each other on the court and play hard,” said coach Monica Halverson.

Sam and Burrows are returners. The others stepped up from JV.

This season’s JV team includes Taylor Garland, Mady Grenz, Anna Happy, Morgan Swindlehurst, KayLee Poffenroth and Katie Moore. Nancy Meissner coaches. Leah Holland assists anywhere and everywhere.

The program got together recently and made posters of their shared goals for the 2021 season.

Communication and competitiveness ranked high on everyone’s list.  So did teamwork, supporting one another, kindness, energy and hard work.

So far, it looks like the Mustangs will face Battle Mountain, West Wendover, Coral Academy, Incline, Silver Stage and Yerington for a total of about 12 games.

Coach Halverson predicts that every team will come to play.

“We want to set the tone of how Mustangs play,” said the coach. “We’ll play our game with hustle and hard work.”

The first home game is against Battle Mountain on Tuesday, March 9 at 4 p.m. and 5 p.m. Schedules may change, so the coaches suggest checking the Pershing County High School volleyball Facebook page for updates.

Officials are still hammering out the details of fan attendance. However, it looks like out-of-towners will stay home. AD Brooks says each volleyball player might have three tickets to distribute to locals as they choose.

“The four weeks will go fast, but we’re going to give it all we’ve got,” said Halverson.

PCHS soccer team heads to Yerington

The Pershing County soccer team travels to Yerington for their season-opener on Saturday, March. 6.

Their first home game is on Saturday, March 13, against Sage Ridge. It starts at 10 a.m.

A high point of the 2021 soccer season will occur on St. Patrick’s Day when Pershing hosts rival school Battle Mountain at 5 p.m. Locals can attend in limited numbers. The girls also look forward to playing West Wendover, Whittell and Incline, for a total of nearly a dozen games, including six at home.
