Even though the Lowry High School football team hasn’t played a game since November 2019, a second member of the Buckaroos is headed north to the Frontier Conference to continue his career at the next level.
Lowry senior Kole Mattson signed a letter of intent to attend College of Idaho this upcoming fall in Caldwell, Idaho.
The 6’7”, 280-pound offensive and defensive lineman will find himself on the Coyotes roster in just a few months.
“I am excited about the next step,” Mattson said. “We called around to a few schools and I made a trip up to Caldwell. I got a chance to meet with the coaches and thought it was a good fit for me. They made me an offer and I couldn’t turn it down.”
Mattson was also a member of the Lowry High School wrestling team.
As a junior, Mattson won the Northern 3A regional championship at 285 pounds and qualified for the state tournament in Mesquite. Mattson placed fourth at the state tournament.
The 2020-21 high school wrestling season was wiped out due to Covid-19 and Nevada restrictions on high-contact sports.
Due to Covid-19 restrictions, the Lowry football team didn’t play in the fall, but begins a six-game spring schedule on Saturday against Elko.
Even though there is a short time in between the spring high school season and fall college season, Mattson is ready to get on to the field.
“It’s been a while since we have been able to play, he said. “I am excited to get back on the field.”
Mattson will be joining a squad that is ranked fifth in the NAIA FirstDown PlayBook Top 25. College of Idaho did not play a fall season and will play a four-game spring season against MSU-Northern, Rocky Mountain, Eastern Oregon and Carroll College.
The Coyotes are the defending Frontier Conference champions and will take a 16-game regular-season win streak into the 2021 spring season.
Mattson noted he is ready for the next step to College of Idaho and is ready to see what happens
“I am going to find out — one step at a time,” he said.
