Obituary: James Douglas “Dougie” Hughes

James Douglas “Dougie” Hughes, 65, of Winnemucca passed away on February, 15th, 2021 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Reno, Nevada.

He was born September, 9th, 1955 in Montgomery, Maryland. He was son to Cullen Conway Hughes and Irene Bustamente Burrell Hughes, and he was preceded in death by both parents.

In fact, his death came exactly two years to the day after the passing of his mother.

Doug is now reunited with his mother and father who were there waiting for him with open arms.

He is survived by his sister, Culleen Andrews, and brother, David Hughes, as well as his nephews and nieces, James, Michael, Kevin, Kim, Tyler and Tayler.

Doug was a trucker who never forgot where those travels took him. He gathered friends along the way that were very important to him.

He was a walking, talking road atlas that could direct you to any destination, a history fanatic, and a very proud American from a military family.

His brother-in-law, Dale Andrews, engraved a wood wall hanging for him with the words of Hank Williams: “Thy soul is God’s; Thy memories are mine.” We hold these words close as we think now on Doug.

It broke our hearts to lose you,

But you did not go alone,

A part of us went with you,

The day God took you home.

His “big family” of friends miss him, and gospel music still plays in his truck. He had a good ride. We love you, brother, son, friend!

He will be cremated and his ashes will be spread along with those of his many dogs who have been cremated and placed in urns on a dedicated shelf. A celebration of his life is in the works. Contact Culleen Andrews (cuandrews48@hotmail.com) if you would like to receive updates.
