A handful of Battle Mountain High School Rodeo Club members are headed to the National High School Finals Rodeo, which takes place July 18-24 at the Lancaster Event Center in Lincoln, Nebraska.
The athletes earned that right with their finishes at the Nevada State High School Finals Rodeo, held over Memorial Day weekend at the Winnemucca Event Center.
Italy Jo Holman will be competing in two events, after finishing in the top four in pole bending and barrel racing. Holman finished third in the first go-around of pole bending with a time of 21.444 seconds.
She had another quick run going in the second go-around, however, she knocked down a pole for a time of 26.375.
Holman still qualified for the short go-around and posted her quickest time of the weekend, placing fourth in 20.832 seconds. She finished fifth in the average with a time of 68.651 seconds and 217.5 points on the year.
After entering the state finals in seventh in barrel racing, Holman had an excellent weekend and jumped to fourth in the final standings. In the first go-around, she finished third with a time of 16.016 seconds and came back with a fourth-place finish in the second go-around at 16.036 in the short go-around, Holman posted her best time of the weekend at 15.883 to place fifth. Her three-round total of 47.935, moved her to fourth place overall in the season-long standings.
Holman qualified for the Silver State International Rodeo in girls cutting and breakaway roping. The Silver State International Rodeo will take place June 30-July 7 at the Winnemucca Events Complex. She also qualified for the Silver State International Rodeo in girls cutting, after a seventh-place finish.
Her older sister, Gracie Lou Holman is headed to Nebraska in girls cutting. She finished second in the state standings, 4.5 points behind Fallon’s Ali Norcutt.
Holman finished second in the first go-around with 142 points and she tied for second in the second go-around with 140 points. Holman remained consistent and placed third in the short go-around with 143 points.
Holman placed second in the average with 425 points, also taking second in the year-end standings with 252.25 points.
Holman will be in Winnemucca in pole bending on the strength of a seventh-place finish and breakaway roping, after placing 10th.
Austin’s Amelia Lancaster qualified for the nationals in the team roping.
Along with heeling partner Jarrett Peek, of Fallon, the two placed third in the year-end standings with 221 points apiece. Lancaster and Peek entered the state finals in fourth place and jumped up a spot, finishing with two solid runs.
The duo stopped the clock at 19.2 seconds in the first go-around and improved from there.
In the second go-around, they posted their fastest time of the weekend — at 8.32 seconds to win the go-around
In the short go-around, the duo was third at 8.86 seconds and placed fourth in the average at 36.38 seconds.
Lancaster qualified for the Silver State International rodeo in barrel racing, breakaway roping, girls cutting, goat tying and pole bending.
Desatoya Coombs came into the state finals fifth in breakaway roping and needed to move up a spot to qualify for the national finals. She got off to a strong start, finishing fourth in the first go-around at 3.53 seconds. She was the runner-up in the second go-around, catching her calf at 3.49 seconds.
In the short go-around, she missed on her first attempt with the loop but rallied and caught the calf with her second loop at 20.71 seconds. She was sixth in the average at 27.73. Catching the final calf in the short go-around was big for her, as it tied her for fourth with Humboldt County’s Emma Garijo.
Coombs will be in Winnemucca in barrel racing, pole bending and team roping.
Jorge Chavira advanced to the national finals in the trap shoot. He entered the state finals in seventh and finished in fourth.
He scored 88 points over the weekend to jump the three spots.
Emma Lemaire qualified for the Silver State International Rodeo in barrel racing, girls cutting and team roping.
Jolena Ayers qualified for the Silver State International Rodeo in barrel racing and goat tying.
At the junior high level, Eli Lancaster is headed to the national finals in team roping after winning the state championship with partner Andrew Morian.
He also qualified in boys breakaway, after placing third in the season-long standings.
He had a time of 4.22 seconds in the first go-around, 4.49 in the second and 12.890 in the short go-around. He qualified for the Silver State International Rodeo in chute dogging, ribbon roping. Jorja Mashburn qualified for the Silver State International Rodeo in barrel racing, breakaway roping, goat tying and pole bending.
