The high school rodeo season came to a close on Saturday night as the National High School Finals Rodeo concluded its week stay at the Lancaster Event Center in Lincoln, Neb.
A handful of Humboldt County and Battle Mountain club members took part in the event.
Humboldt County’s Billy DeLong competed in three events. He finished 29th in the nation with 275 points. In his first performance, he scored 137 points, which was good enough for sixth and 37th in the first go-around.
He scored 138 points in his second performance that put him fifth and 34th for the second go-around. He fell short of qualifying for the short go-around.
In steer wrestling, he stopped the clock at 11.81 seconds in his performance that put him 13th and 66th in the first go around. He did not have a time in the second performance and was 103rd on just the one time.
Tie-down roping went better for DeLong, as he had a time of 18.51 in his first performance, which slotted him ninth and 70th in the first go-around. DeLong had a time of 23.43 in his second performance that put him 16th and 89th in the second the second go-around. He was 59th in the average at 52.187.
Emma Garijo had a strong first run in pole bending with a time of 21.379 that put her seventh in the performance and 36th in the first go-around. However, Garijo knocked down a pair of poles in her second performance with a time of 30.808. She finished 122nd in the average at 52.187.
Isaac Mori also competed in three events and he finished 15th in the nation in reined cow horse with 856 points. In his first performance, Mori scored 287 points to be seventh and 13th in the first go-around. Mori scored 286 points in his second performance to place third and that was good enough for 19th in the go-around. In the short go-around, he scored 283 points to place 13th.
He had a strong showing in cutting, finishing 22nd in the nation with 277 points. He scored 139 points in his first performance to place fourth and 25th in the first go-around. He scored 138 points in his second performance to place third and 25th in the go-around. He was just a few spots out of the short go-around.
In saddle bronc, Mori did not have a qualified ride in either performance.
Cooper Hill made the trip to Nebraska as well and competed in the rifle shoot.
Italy Jo Holman from Carlin competed with the Battle Mountain Rodeo Club in two events.
She finished 48th in the nation in barrel racing with an average time of 36.527.
In her first performance, Holman was 11th with a time of 18.372, which put her 63rd in the first g-around. She improved to 18.155 in her second performance that put her eighth and 57th in the go-around.
In pole bending, she knocked down a couple poles in her first performance and had a time of 31.958. She knocked down a pole in her second performance as well and had a time of 26.423. She had an average of 38.381.
Gracie Lou Holman competed in cutting and was 57th in the nation with 270 points.
She scored 131 points in the first performance to place seventh and 44th in the go-around. She had 131 points in her second performance, finishing 13th and 71st in the go-around.
Desatoya Coombs qualified in breakaway roping but did not have a time in either performance. Jorge Chivra qualified for the trap shoot for Battle Mountain.
Sam Petersen from Helena, Mont., was crowned the all-around cowboys, while Utah’s Kade Madsen was the all-around rookie cowboy.
Tylor Todd of Rexford, Kan., won the all-around cowgirl honor and Kentucky’s Addey Lawson was named the all-around rookie cowgirl.
Texas swept the team standing victories, with Nevada 10th in the girls and 28th in the boys.
