PCHS football and soccer ready for 2021-2022 seasons

As the calendar hits July, the fall sports season for the Pershing County High School football and girls soccer teams are just around the corner.

Soccer starts with a treat for the home crowd — a preseason tournament the weekend of Aug. 27-28.

Starting times are still to be announced.

Next, the girls travel to White Pine (Sept. 10), West Wendover (Sept. 11) and North Tahoe (Sept. 17).

They’re back in Lovelock on Sept. 18 at 10 a.m. for the first home game of the season, against Incline.

The JV and varsity football teams begin with scrimmages in Battle Mountain (Aug. 14) and Feather River College (Aug. 21).

The teams return to Lovelock for their first home game, a non-league matchup against the Dayton Dust Devils on Friday Sept. 3.

Each sport culminates with state tournaments, although the sites are still on the drawing board.

The soccer team hopes to go for the gold on Nov. 5-6.

For volleyball, the regionals are Nov. 5-6, followed by the state tournament Nov. 12-13.

For football, the state semifinals are Saturday, Nov. 13. The NIAA State Championship is on Saturday, Nov. 20.

The Mustangs want to win the trophy back from the Yerington Lions.

In 2019 at Carson High School, the Lions beat Lincoln County 33-22 for their first 2A state title since 2015.

In 2020, the undefeated Mustangs didn’t get to battle for the return of the prize. Covid sank any hope of a postseason.

Stay tuned.
