JOSE E. SAPIEN
(El Oso)
1952-2021
Winnemucca resident Jose E. Sapien passed away peacefully on January 5, 2021. Jose was born on December 25, 1952 to Jose Perfecto Sapien and Blanca Mujica in Mexico City, Mexico.
Jose is survived by his wife of 49 years Alicia Sapien, his six children, Jose E. Sapien Jr., Marcela Gonzalez (Bernabe), Gisela Barajas (German), Rosa Castellanos (Ivan), Diego Sapien (Jenny), and Adrian Sapien (Linda), 22 grandchildren, and a great-grand son. He is also survived by his nine siblings. He is preceded in death by his mother Blanca Mujica.
Jose came to the United States in 1978 to give his wife and three children a better life and help support his parents and siblings who he left behind. He had numerous jobs, from being a chef at 76, Burns Brothers, Winners. He also worked for Winnemucca Farms and Getchell Gold, finally worked for Nevada Energy for over 16 years where he retired in 2017. Jose loved dancing especially his cumbias, being with his family, and spending time with his grandchildren.
Everyone who knew Jose knew his passion for soccer, from playing, coaching, and refereeing. His favorite soccer team being Necaxa.
Jose and his friend started the Hispanic Soccer League (La Amistad) back in the 1980’s where many members of the Hispanic community enjoyed watching on Sundays.
He also coached the LHS girls’ soccer team for a couple of years. He was also known for his DJ, DJ OSO, where he DJ for many events, from weddings, quinceañeras, graduations, many school dances for LHS and Sonoma Heights. He also choreographed many quinceañera waltz from his daughters to his granddaughters, and many young girls in the community.
Jose will be truly missed by his family and friends. He will be remembered for his big smile and generous heart, and him always asking everyone to dance cumbias with him. We love you immensely.

Funeral Services will be on February 6, at 11 a.m. at Saints Paul’s Catholic Church.
