Obituary: Charles Burton Safford

Charles Safford of Lovelock Nevada past peacefully on December 19, 2020 at his home on the Riverside Ranch.  

He was born on June 23, 1926 in Merced California to Isabelle and Kenneth Safford. 

Whether you knew Charles from breakfast at La Casita or Sturgeons, he was always friendly and very personable. 

He always had a story of his life and experiences.  

In 1944 with World War II still raging he quit high school to join the Marines. 

Charlie served in the 3rd Marine Division 12th Regiment 4th Battalion ‘L’ Battery, and was loading ammunition on board ship to invade Japan when the war ended.  

After returning home he met and married his wife of the next 71 years, Betty Speaker.  

In 1963 he moved to Lovelock, Nevada. 

 Wanting to raise a family on his own ranch. Here they raised three children and several grandchildren.

 He was one of the longest standing board members on the Pershing County Water Conservation District.  Charles and Betty enjoyed traveling, cruising through the Panama Canal and their trip to Hawaii, the island that Charles had only seen from the porthole of a ship heading off to war.

Preceding him in death were his parents and sister, Jane Wood and his wife Betty.  Charlie leaves behind his children Charlie M. (Linda) Safford, Ann (David) Harvey, and Jim (Loretta) Safford, grandchildren Rachel, Sandy, Lisa, Mandy, C.J. and Missy.  

He is also survived by 3 great-grandchildren, and his nieces and nephews and their children and grandchildren.

Charles and Betty will be laid to rest at the family cemetery in Hornitos California.
