The Pershing County High School girls basketball team had a lot to talk about.
They had just finished their first half against Virginia City and were ahead by two points — too close for comfort.
“I was impressed when I walked into the locker room and the team was discussing all the things they needed to fix for the second half,” said PCHS coach Lee Houston. “We always talk about the third quarter being the most important.”
Their plans worked. Lovelock pulled away in the third quarter, outscoring the Muckers 12-0.
The final score was 40-23. With the win the Mustangs improved to 6-4, overall.
“We were pleased to start working Presley Burrows back into the lineup,” said Houston. “She makes a huge difference on the court with her experience and athleticism.”
Burrows is one of the team’s three senior captains. The other two are Bela Rosas and Kylee Fuller.
A volleyball injury knocked Burrows out of the pre-season. Now she’s back on the court and eager to compete.
She’ll get to play one season of high school basketball with her sister Raegan, a freshman.
Raegan Burrows teamed up with Taylor Garland on defense during the non-conference road game in Virginia City. They took turns guarding their point guard. Kaydance Happy scored 12 points with 12 rebounds, a double-double.
The coach is proud of the team’s balanced scoring attack. Multiple girls scored four to six points.
“We look forward to practice over the Christmas break to continue to get better and prepare for league opponents,” he said.
After break, they’ll compete against Coral Academy (Dec. 27), Dayton (Dec. 28) and Yerington (Jan. 7), all road games.
On Saturday, Jan. 8, they play at home for the first time in a couple of years.
They’ll host Silver Stage at 2 p.m.
