The Battle Mountain High School wrestling team made the short trip to Winnemucca this past weekend for the Cody Louk Invitational.
The Longhorns had a strong showing over the two days, finishing fifth with 136.50 points and was the highest finishing 2A school.
Northern 5A perennial power Spanish Springs claimed the team championship with 262 points and Elko was second at 183.50. Lowry (174) and Damonte Ranch (140) were third and fourth, respectively.
This was a good tournament for us,” said BMHS head coach Mitch Domagala. “We did a lot of good things this weekend — still a ways to go though.”
Cruz Jimenez at 106 pounds, Sean Scherer (113) and Zach Duggan (195) earned individual runner-up finishes.
Jimenez opened up the tournament with wins by pin over Spanish Springs Levrett Simpson and Elko’s Camden Jensen. Jimenez got through to the finals with an 8-5 win over Lowry’s Coda Nichols on Saturday morning. Jimenez lost his title bout to Spanish Springs’ Tobey Forman by pin.
Scherer had the same route as Jimenez, pinning Damonte Ranch’s Cayden Long and Reno’s Kaliel Russel in the opening rounds.
In the semifinals, Scherer collected a 4-0 victory over Spanish Springs’ Tyler Schultz. Scherer lost his championship match to Elko’s Marco Romero by a 10-1 decision.
Duggan never saw his first three matches go past the first period. He pinned Manuel Garcia of Douglas in the opening round in 88 seconds.
Duggan needed just 75 seconds to pin Hunter Smith of Lowry and Duggan reached final with a win over Spanish Springs’ Johnny Collier. Duggan lost to Reno’s Adam Clawson by a 16-9 decision in the final.
“It was great just getting back to these bigger tournaments,” Domagala said. “This is a good atmosphere to help prepare the kids for the postseason.”
Liam Bundrock (120) and Brice Domagala (220) placed fourth for the Longhorns.
After a first-round bye, Bundrock pinned Sparks; Kaiden Irwin to get into the quarterfinals.
Bundrock lost to Carson’s Lucas Wold but fought back through the consolation bracket. Bundrock collected three wins in the consolation bracket, before losing the third-place bout to Douglas’ Hunter Morris.
Domagala cruised into the semifinals at 220 pounds by pinning Tonopah’s Charles Finn and Elko’s Ayden Rodriguez.
Domagala lost his semifinal match to Nathan Glass of Fernley, but bounced back to pin Lowry’s David Walker in the consolation semifinals. Ilex Garcia od Damonte Ranch beat Domagala in the third-place match.
Stone Whitlock placed fifth at 152 pounds and Scott Wall (170), Asher Bundrock (182) and Dalton Shake (220) all scored points for the Longhorns.
“We’ll learn from this weekend and just keep improving,” Domagala said.
Battle Mountain is scheduled to travel to Twin Falls, Idaho, this weekend for the Wiley Dobbs Invitational. The Longhorns travel to Ely on Dec. 21 for the White Pine Invitational.
