The Pershing County girls basketball team competed in a preseason tournament in Hawthorne this past weekend. They played five games over three days against teams of varying skill levels.
The Mustangs beat Smith Valley (33-16), Hawthorne (55-17) and Sierra Stage Academy (52-10).
Pershing County lost to Fallon (50-17) and Incline (45-20).
Pershing County’s varsity roster includes three seniors – Bela Rosas, Kylee Fuller and Presley Burrows. Burrows hurt her knee in the zone volleyball tournament and should return to the floor soon, according to coach Lee Houston.
Senior Aledda Sam injured her knee during the volleyball season and will not recover in time to play. She’ll find other ways to contribute to the team. Kaydance Happy and Kairi Watson are juniors. Taylor Garland is a sophomore. The freshmen include Raegan Burrows and Aaliyah Allen.
“The five games allowed us to work on a lot of things and it definitely shows us what we need to cover in practice,” said Houston. “I was proud of the effort and willingness to learn and get better.”
The girls have three days of practice before heading to Whittell for another preseason tournament (Dec. 9-11).
