It was a big weekend for Northern Nevada’s high school soccer world. Pershing County High School hosted a tournament from Thursday through Saturday.
The Mustangs competed against the Fernley Vaqueros, North Tahoe Lakers, Spring Creek Spartans and Lowry Buckaroos.
Other teams included White Pine, West Wendover and Battle Mountain. Lowry and Tahoe sent both boys and girls teams. Wendover sent a boys team.
The games spilled over onto two fields at the high school. Spectators from home towns across the region watched from the sidelines.
Not all of the official scores were available at press time but the point of preseason tournaments is to get out and play.
That’s what the athletes did in their first tourney for the past couple of years. For some of their games the Mustangs wore bright red knee socks.
Yasmine Acosta, Lily Anderson, Grace Kalsem, Kim Hinds and Diana Pineda played their first high school games. They join a team that pushes itself to compete against bigger schools.
Anderson even tried her hand at goal keeping. She played in the second half of the Spring Creek game on Friday. Saturday, she came back to face Lowry for all but the last 10 minutes of the game.
“I was nervous to goal keep at the high school level but glad that I got to do it,” she said. “I hope to do it again.”
Miya Gallagher, Rylee Renfroe, Mikayla Leavitt and Kimberley Trowbridge are sophomores. There are only two seniors — Kylee Fuller and Anna Jimenez.
Everybody else is a junior — Hannah Gonzalez, Tavis Hunt, Cora Trowbridge, Julie (Lex) Chandler, Jillian Bridges and Riley Soliman.
Regular goalkeeper Jillian Bridges got to play on the field for a couple of games and showed her versatility.
What’s next for the Lady Mustangs?
For now, they take to the road. They’ll play White Pine (Sept. 10), West Wendover (Sept. 11) and North Tahoe (Sept. 17).
On Saturday, Sept. 18, the Mustangs host the Incline Highlanders starting at 10 a.m.
