Don’t forget the cheerleaders

Friday night football wouldn’t be the same without the Pershing County spirit squad. They add a spark of excitement to the atmosphere. Later in the year, they’ll be back for basketball.

Jena Pilon, Kaylah Hanley, Lupita Lopez, Marya Burke, Kyria Angel and Brooklyn Mitchell make up the six-girl team. Pilon and Hanley are sophomores. The rest are juniors.

In 2020, the squad lost out on two seasons when the NIAA canceled football and basketball.

However, they bounced back in the spring when the officials okayed a shortened football season. Basketball was still a no-go.

In Mach. 2020, the Mustang football team rallied from a 20-point deficit to beat Battle Mountain 23-20. Six cheerleaders yelled at the top of their lungs. It was a highlight of the year.

So far, the Mustangs expect full seasons of each high school sport, including basketball. So look for the girls in red and white. But be prepared. Spirit can be contagious.
