The Pershing County Mustangs hosted an old friend last week for four days of concentrated volleyball.
“This is the second Gold Medal Squared camp I’ve organized for my players,” said head coach Monica Halverson. “It has been going on since Shauna Bake ran the program.”
GMS coach David Irving traveled from Redding, Calif., to inspire and challenge three middle and 14 high school volleyball players.
“I love the relationships that are built during this week, especially right before tryouts,” said Halverson.
The coaches held tryouts this past Monday and Tuesday.
The returning seniors are Aledda Sam and Presley Burrows. Both girls are team captains. Hannah Montes, also a senior, is back after missing out on the last season.
Burrows was the 2A League MVP last spring. Sam made the 2nd team All-Conference.
At press time, the coaches are still finalizing the JV and varsity rosters.
Nancy Meissner and Leah Holland assist Halverson. Maggie Baker (PCHS Class of 2018) will help the setters at practices.
Baker teaches health, physical education and social emotional learning at the middle school. She’s also the middle school cheer coach.
“This season is already buzzing with excitement,
This Halverson. “We will have a competitive group that should be fun to watch. We have big goals and will work hard to accomplish them.
Our motto this year is, “Believe, achieve, succeed..”
The varsity girls travel to the Yerington tournament. The following week, Aug. 27-28, they play at the Battle Mountain tourney.
On Thursday, Sept 2, the Lady Mustangs open the 2021-2022 season at home. They play Oasis Academy at 4 and 5 p.m.
